Archives Celebrated Women’s History Month, March 6, 2004

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Tishomingo County Archives & History Museum held short workshops entitled "Women Born in 19th Century Mississippi Pioneering the Future."  Mississippi gave birth to some remarkable women in the 19th century.  Their achievements not only impacted the people of Mississippi; they were felt worldwide.  These women were legislators, authors, painters, musicians, senators, lawyers, and scientists.  Women today follow in the paths that these women forged. Three 45-minute workshops were scheduled beginning at 10:15 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. in the state history room during open house on Saturday, March 6, 2004.

Activities were also available for the younger generation.  Children enjoyed activities such as coloring books, word finds, crossword puzzles, and the chance to create a mobile of famous women and their accomplishments.  Older young people enjoyed a booklet on women’s suffrage; it contained brief biographies of 21 women, including access to over 50 pages of biographical information.  Two correlating articles and lesson plans were also available.

These workshops proved to be both educational and fun for all ages. Additional sessions were arranged during the month of March by appointment.

The Mission Quilters of Tishomingo County donated a string quilt to be used in a raffle for the Tishomingo County Archives & History Museum.  Mission Quilters is composed of a group of women that makes quilts for charity in Iuka.  The women that worked on this quilt were Martha Austin of Iuka, Miss.; Burke Bonds of Tishomingo, Miss.; Sandy Rich of Corinth, Miss.; Marquita Mathis of Iuka, Miss.; and Sharon Beene of Glen, Miss.

The quilt, large enough to fit down to the bedrails of a queen-size bed, was displayed at the museum for three months.  The quilt drawing was held December 15, 2004; and the winner was Mrs. Brenda Mills.
