The Tishomingo County Archives & History Museum is
operated by the Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society, a
non-profit, volunteer-based organization. The archives’ resources are used to
educate the public about Tishomingo County history through exhibits, programs,
and publications.
If you would like to be involved in a fulfilling project
and be a part of an exciting staff ― using your skills, talents, and expertise
to help fulfill the mission of the Society ― the Old Tishomingo County
Courthouse may be the place for you! We are proud of the quality work
performed by our steadfast volunteer corps and can utilize you on-site or
off-site.
Training and training materials will be provided by the
Society. A record will be kept of your volunteer service. Active volunteers
are eligible for a discount in the gift shop and are invited to participate in
volunteer appreciation programs.
Here are some of our current volunteer openings:
Curatorial Assistant
― The secret is out: the real reason most people get involved in museums
is to "get their hands on the stuff!" Here's your chance to learn from the
pros how to work with, handle, move, and research the collections of the
Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society. Join a group of
volunteers and work on special projects. This can be a regular or an
occasional volunteer opportunity.
Internships ― College
students are welcomed as interns in the following areas: oral history,
history, and education. These unpaid positions of 5-20 hours per week provide
valuable field experience within the students’ area of study. Time frame:
Summer and academic school year; flexible hours.
Lawn Care and Maintenance
― A good job for someone who likes to be a "handy man" and work 4 or more
hours a week with their hands. A person who would enjoy performing maintenance
on the Old Tishomingo County Courthouse so future generations can visit and
see a vital part of Tishomingo County history. A person who likes to build
things out of wood, take an idea from conception, then design and build things
like shadow boxes, back drops for exhibits, maintain the lawn, grow rose
bushes and other plants to keep the grounds looking beautiful during the
growing season, and more. It would be a plus for this person to love to work
"outside" and have a "green thumb."
Library Assistant ― Join
a dedicated group of TCHGS volunteers and help manage the records, process new
acquisitions, re-shelve and re-house library materials, and assist with other
projects. This can be a regular or an occasional volunteer opportunity.
Researcher ― Researchers
from all over the world contact TCHGS by phone, mail, and e-mail with research
questions. Volunteer researchers work with staff to answer questions and
assemble research materials. Training is provided.
Receptionist ― This is
an all-time favorite way to get to know your Historical & Genealogical Society
better. Receptionists greet guests, answer phones, register researchers, work
in the gift shop, and give museum tours. They also provide office support to
staff, assisting with mailings, photocopying, and data entry. This is a
regular volunteer opportunity, or you can be on-call to help as needed.
Typist ― Do you live too
far away to volunteer onsite? Then consider typing one of the many projects we
have going to preserve and share the fine history of our County. Projects
range from one page to a whole book and can be transmitted electronically.
