Woodall Mountain - Highest Point in the State of Mississippi

Tishomingo County has the distinction of being the home of the highest point in the State of Mississippi. Woodall Mountain, reaching an elevation of 806 feet above sea level, is part of the Southwest Appalachian Mountains. Previously known as Yow Hill, Woodall Mountain is the only state high point that was subject to battle. Woodall Mountain was the scene of fighting during the  Civil War, where, on September 19, 1862, the Battle of Iuka took place. Union General William Rosecrans occupied the mountain and used it to launch artillery barrages on the town of Iuka. The battle was a victory for the Union. The hill itself was renamed in 1887 to honor Tishomingo County Sheriff Zephaniah H. Woodall.
