W.R. Cole - R. J. Thurmond
House
202 South Jackson
This
house was built in the 1850's,
and was owned by the W. R. Cole family during the Civil War. Mrs.
Cole's letters written during the war are treasured as an accurate
account
of the conditions during the war. Later, R. J. Thurmond
purchased
the house. Mr. Thurmond was a wealthy business man in Ripley. He
became even more
well known after he shot Colonel W. C. Falkner in Ripley, Mississippi,
on November 5, 1889. Colonel Falkner died from the gunshot wound to the
head the next day.
Mr. Thurmond was acquitted of the murder charge and continued to live
in Ripley after the trial.
