Do you know of anyone else buried in this Cemetery? There are numerous graves marked with just a small metal cross. All of the iron crosses at Marvin Hill were made by Randolph Ponder, deceased and buried in Marvin Hill Cemetery. Prior to the crosses, there were just mounds of dirt.

Francis Marion Carlisle, b. Nov 1, 1846 in AL. Died Nov 2, 1917.
Francis Marion Carlisle was b. in Marion Co, AL. He was the son of: John (aka Jack) Carlisle, b. late 1810 in NC, and Matilda Ophelia Perry, b. ca 1819 in Marion Co AL. John died May 2, 1774. He built New Hope Presbyterian in 1848, and was a member of Masonic Lodge 224 that was located at the church until it moved to Maben, MS. Maida Ophelia's parents were: William Perry, b 1777 in KY and Elizabeth Jane Stanford b. 1793 in Craven, Chester Co, SC. Her parents were Thomas Stanford, b. 1756 in VA, and Martha Brown, b. in NC. Thomas's father was William Stanford, b 1729 in north Ireland. The two met and married in Giles Co, TN. Thomas and Martha Stanford left TN due to issued land grants being taken back by TN. They moved to Marion Co, AL where Martha Brown d. in 1819. Her daughter, Elizabeth Jane Perry, was with her when she died. During Jane's stay in AL, Matilda Ophelia was born. She is the only child b. in AL. The rest were b. in TN, except for their the last child, Riley (?) who was b. ca 1830 in Sumner Co, MS. Thomas Stanford applied for a Revolutionary war pension in 1843 in Layette Co, AL. He and Martha are buried in Old Nebo Cemetery in AL. William Perry died in 1850 at the age of 53 of the 'flux'. Elizabeth Jane Perry was living with their son, William, and his family on the 1880 census and was 87 years old. She could not be found on the 1890 census.

EUPORA - Funeral services for Clatie Bland will be conducted at 1 p.m. today from Oliver Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Marvin Hill Cemetery in Webster County. Billy Hood will officiate. Visitation was from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Bland died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at Oktibbeha County Hospital. He was 84. A Webster County native, he was a retired farmer and former employee of Babcock & Wilcox Manufacturing Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Mantee. He was a Cumberland resident. He is survived by his daughters, Sylvia Roberson, Sara Childress and Jo Butler, all of Cumberland; sister, Reva B. Ray of Cumberland; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

I have just found this Webster County Site and it is wonderful. I have just been going thru the cemetaries and notice that there is a question about the 5 crosses. My cousin Louise (McMahon) Kilpartick took me on a tour of the places where all my family memebers were buried (in Oct 2005) and Marvin Hill was one. She was told by her father Herman McMahon that the crosses are as follows:
William McMahon born in 1840 and his wife Maggie McGee born 1843 a infant child and the other two most likely belong toGeorge Yeats born in 1850 and his wife Eliza Crowley Yeats. My Uncle Herman also said that Mr. Ponder was the man who made the crosses for the family. I am sending you a picture of my gg grandfather William McMahon who was in the CSA and was wounded and carry a ball in his leg till he died. Thank you Betty J. Copeland

William McMahon was born about Jan. 1839 the son of David & Mary (Lile) McMahon! William married Maggie McGee in the 1860’s, they had three known children! Maggie was born abt. 1843, death is unknown! Joseph Ed, Mary C., and Louis W. McMahon! William died abt. 1910 – 1920 in Webster Co., Miss
