I am researching the Poe family of Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Webster Counties.  My gg grandmother, Mary Cox, of Chickasaw County had a child out of wedlock in 1859 supposedly fathered by someone with the last name Poe.  Mary died while her son was young (before 1870) and the child was raised by his grandfather and moved to Monroe County, MS before 1880.  This is for my genealogy research only!
Does anyone have any information regarding an out of wedlock child fathered by a man named Poe?  Thanks so much for any information you might have.

MABUS, HORTON, FERGUSON

I have been trying to find my dad's aunt's descendants for several years now and I come to a brick wall every time.  I am hoping that someone in this county may remember or know of this family.  My dad's aunt was Elizabeth Mabus who married a Horton making her Elizabeth Horton.  My last paper trail has her living in Mathiston at the time of her brothers death in 1954.  I don't know who she married.  I know of one child a girl named Mary Nell Horton.  Mary Nell was born probably in the early 30's and I know that she attended Woods College in Mathiston probably in the late 40's or early 50's.  I don't know if there were any more children; some thinks that she may have had a son, but not sure at this time.  Some think that Elizabeth may have married a Ferguson, but again not sure if this is true.  I am so hoping that someone may remember this family and could give me information that may help me put the puzzle pieces together.  This is the only side of my dad's family that I haven't found yet.

TAYLOR, AMMONS, LOGGINS, MITCHELL, POE

I read with great interest particular surnames listed on the 1874 Webster Co. personal tax roll.  I've found that a few of my maternal ancestors were located in MS: Webster, Choctaw and Sunflower counties. Most importantly, information taken in 1902 Dawes Testimony, Meridian, MS by my gr-gr-grandmother Margaret Taylor (applying for enrollment) indicates that her relations were MS Choctaw; or Chata lusa, Choctaws with black ancestry. My question is whether or not anyone on the 1874 list with surnames: AMMONS;  LOGGINS; MITCHELL; Poe; or TAYLOR are of Choctaw ancestry;and/or owners of black Choctaws? Please indulge me; my maternal line~ At the time of Margaret Taylor's Dawes Testimony, her age was given as 46-7 yrs. Margaret Taylor b. abt 1854-55 married Horace Taylor (a daughter of Margaret/Horace, my gr-grandmother Barbara married Wm. W. Mitchell)  Charles Loggins  and Hettie Loggins were Margaret's parents.  Amy Ammons indicated as full blood Choctaw was Charles' mother. It's been difficult to locate Amy Ammons because in the Dawes Testimony, it was stated that she "died long before the war".  Her parents aren't indicated, nor do I find names of siblings. I think Charles may've had half-siblings, one of which was named Benjamin Poe. I'd appreciate any help or direction you can offer. These people are believed to be African ancestry-Choctaw Indians. My gr-grandmother Barbara Taylor Mitchell was born in Walthall, Webster Co, MS. Margaret Taylor mentioned as part of her testimony that her father lived most all of his life in Choctaw Co. and had been dead 15 years at the time of her testimony. Her grandmother Amy died before the War, and that her family (Margaret's) were born into slavery, and were familiar with the 1866 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit CONTACT ME BY EMAIL AT cecelia_vaughan@bphc.org

MCMAHON, MCMAHAN, CURRY, MEREDITH

My name is Betty Copeland and I would like to add the following names:
1.  McMahon/McMahan
2.  Curry
3.  Meredith
My grandfather was David Edward
McMahon born in Webster Co. in 1901 and his father was Joe Ed McMahon (died in 1901) who it was said had the most wonderful "Bass" signing voice.  Joe Ed was married to Ada Lou Yeats and her father [George yeats] was married to E. Crowley who died young [between 1874/80] and we don't know where she is buried.
My grandmother was Lourena
Meredith McMahon and was born in Webster Co. in 1905.  My great grand mother was Mattie (Martha Mytric) Curry born 1876 and her brother was Doctor Hugh Curry.
All the above surnames came into Webster/Choctaw/Oktibbeha/chickasaw counties at least as early as 1840's (for sure the McMahon's).  My ggg Grandfather David McMahon was born in 1814 in SC married in 1837 in Perry, AL and was in Starkville, MS in 1840.  And so it was with the other ggg grandfather's, born in AL and moved into MS
