A former resident of Yazoo City, Mr. John Joseph Humphreys, Sr., died this past Monday {Aug 18, 2003] in Wilmington, NC.  John Joe was raised in Yazoo County [Wolf Lake, Erickson place] and attended St Clara Academy from the 3rd grade til graduation with the class of 1942.  He served in the US Navy during WW2, and graduated from Mississippi State College afterwards.   He had many, many kin and  friends in Yazoo County and the great State of Mississippi.

Mr. John Joseph Humphreys Sr., age 79, of 1915 Wrightsville Green Ave., Wilmington, [NC] died Monday, August 18, 2003, at Liberty Commons Nursing Center. 

Mr. Humphreys was born June 15, 1924, in Memphis, TN, the son of the late Irwin and Margaret Ann Erickson Humphreys. He was a member of St. Marks Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and had retired from U.S. Agri-Chemicals Company. 

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Tippett Humphreys of the home; his son, John J. Humphreys Jr. of Charlotte, NC; his three daughters, Nancy Wilder of Raleigh, Robyn McDaniel of Apex, NC, Mary Humphreys of Heinesville, GA, a sister, Margaret Ann Miles of Chattanooga, TN; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Phibbs and husband Andrew of Tampa, FL, Michael Wilder of Wilmington, Taylor and Jordan Lardinois of Heinesville, GA. 

A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at St. Mark Catholic Church by Father Matthew Hendrick. The inurnment will take place at a later date. 

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1915 Wrightsville Green Ave., Wilmington and have requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 208, Raleigh, NC 27605 or to the American Cancer Society, 3131 Wrightsville Ave., Wilmington, NC 28408.
