1900 Enumeration Districts

Yes, this site is just under construction.

One of the advantages of working with the Fallon County site is that it is a relatively young area in terms of settlement by immigrants. Prior to 1914 the area was part of Custer County. So the 1920 Census was the first to recognize the area as Fallon County. One of the disadvantages would be the limited number of request for information on the county. Thus, little effort has been made to commercially produce transcribed data of the area.

We have the film strips of the 1920, 1910, and 1900 Census reports and are in the process of transcribing the information. Please! if you are aware of this task already started or available let us know and we will put our efforts to some other course.

As most of you know-the films are available from a number of sources. The transcribing of these images has not yet been automated. (Anyway not down at the level of demand such as Fallon County). We have started with the 1920 Census in hopes that by the time we get into the others we will have acquired some knowledge of the procedure, area and names. Again if you know of a data base which will expedite this process let us know.

This area now consists of all of /or parts of the following counties: Carter, Fallon, Wibaux, Prairie, Rosebud, Powder River and Custer counties.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of preservation and legibility of these records. For the historical value to the area- these records should be transcribed. This period of history was before the arrival of the railroad through the mid-section of Custer County. It was also before the majority of the area was open for homesteading.

This area now consists of all of /or parts of the following counties: Carter, Fallon, Wibaux, Prairie, Rosebud, Powder River and Custer counties.

From my point of view (as it applies to what is now Fallon County): this Census Report is a little disappointing. The script is most difficult to read, the quality of preservation is lacking and most of all-the enumerators missed a lot of the newly established homesteaders.

If someone would like to tackle this job of transcribing I would be most happy to upload the files. The transcription task is greater than the resources.
