Greenridge Cemetery

The first cemetery in Jordan was located on the D.J. Tierney farm on the west side of Jordan where the Pioneer Cemetery is today.  This cemetery was not organized and in November 1916 the Greenridge Cemetery Association was formed and the land surveyed.  The land comprising the Greenridge Cemetery was formerly owned by A.E. Panwitz, who sold 10 acres to the cemetery association for $200.  This association consisted of Mrs. H.D. Huff, D.J. Tierney, and Dr. David A. Baker.

By the mid 1920's the people involved in the bookkeeping for the cemetery association had moved away taking the cemetery records, and money, with them.  Greenridge was not kept up as the cemetery west of town was again used.  Other than one family, there have been no burials in Greenridge since the 1930's.

The cemetery has been fenced in the last several years, although the south part of the cemetery lies outside the fence.  There are no markers outside the fence but there is a large depression in what would be the south-west corner of the cemetery.  An old map shows small lots in this corner (but no names) and may be where children are buried whose graves have not been located.  It is also told that, following an outbreak of Smallpox, a number were buried off to themselves and may explain why these graves are hundreds of feet from any others.

There are 56 marked graves in the cemetery.  An early map was found in the courthouse that listed most of the marked graves and about 40 more.  This map was very hard to read and some of it was not legible.  Between markers, the map, death records, and obituaries, the names of over 100 people buried in Greenridge are known.
