This
letter was received from Sandro Guizzardi, who lives in Italy.
He is the son Corrado Guizzardi who was detained at Fort Missoula.
A relative of mine had been a guard at Fort Missoula and I had
always been told that the detainees were well treated. So I
asked Sandro what his take was on this issue. Sandro wrote:
"I
can start by telling you that dad did every possible thing to
remain in the US after war was over; this can give you an idea
of how he was treated in the camp.
Of course, they were not free, they were forced to stay "in
bounds", far from their country and families... ...BUT,
I don't remember dad saying any bad thing, or having bad memories
about "Fort Missoula". I always remember the stories
he used to tell, when the guards went hunting deers with the
"prisioners"; when they got sick and they were taken
to the hospital at once and treated as you in the US treat decent
people: AS HUMAN BEINGS, and in all cases, as if they were US
citizens.
When I tell my friends the story of the "Olive Oil Revolution"
they can't believe that the italians were complaining about
the QUALITY of the olive oil they were having!!! I mean, they
were prisioners, not guests in some fancy restaurant; well,
I really don't know how, but they got a better olive oil! To
me that's unbelievable.
Another thing, the Japanese [detainees] received fresh fish
EVERY DAY for their sushi!!!! Yes, even after Pearl Harbor!
Even if they were "labeled" as "enemy aliens"
and they were not in a summer camp, they were treated as any
other person. Hard to understand and to believe, but, why would
my dad lie about it?"
