Missoula County was created in Western Montana before the Montana Territory was created. Then, Hell Gate was it's county seat. Later, Missoula County became one of the original nine counties created by the Montana legislature in 1865. In ensuing years, parts of the county were taken to form Flathead, Ravalli, and Lake Counties, and parts of Missoula County were added to Powell and Granite Counties. |
