Statewide Record Holdings
There are very few early Montana statewide records in
existence, as most of these records are required to be created within each of
the counties, and the rules for content are dictated by each of the various
departments within that county. Some are located in Idaho, Oregon or
Washington. Usage controls were placed upon many of the records that could be
available for genealogical research by agencies that complied early year
records. Also, many records that existed prior to 1920 were simply lost for
various reasons. Some records are published by other genealogical societies,
and are not available for direct online research. Links to these various
published on-line articles, hard-copy references are not provided, as they
change too often.
