Occasionally old photographs are found in storage trunks, auctions and garage sales. Generally without names, but certain clues may exist that could trace the ownerships. Please submit posting requests to me. These pictures are a door to our past, and are too good to simply toss aside. Thus, this site is dedicated to display them, along with as much information as possible. Hopefully you will take a moment to review them, and perhaps they can be identified and returned to a rightful owner. Contact the webmaster for details. The pictures are mounted in a photo album that is leather bound and
measuring 6x6 inches and about 2 1/2 inches deep. The page\photo holders are gold
gilded. The engraving on the spine merely says ALBUM in gold. The album
was purchased in a yard sale in Stevensville about 1971. All of the photos
were taken at professional studios throughout the Midwest. The majority of
the pictures were taken from the studio of William McHenry in Freeport
Illinois.
Image five provided the address of the photographer
McHenry as being 106 Stephenson Street in Freeport, Illinois. There
is a site dedicated to the photographer noted on the Stephenson County
Historical Society of Freeport Illinois at: http://www.stephcohs.org/photographers.htm
Accordingly, from the history noted on this site, photo five of the man was taken between 1872-1883. Photo 1 has a hand written identification on the back of its 4x6 picture. See the attachment. It clearly indicates the location in Corvallis but the name is up for grabs. The 8x10 (Group photo of the family) has a nice hand embroidered frame that was sent askew trying to get at the name on the back. See attachment 2. Other photos
were taken at the Doolittle Studio in Landmark, Illinois, some in Nebraska as
well as other states. It is nearly impossible to remove the photos from
their page without tearing the photo holder\frame. At least
six of the photos are tintypes. The darkened images represent those pictures.
The full size picture provides more clarity.
There is a description of a similar album with photos taken by Wm. McHenry at the following site: http://www.monticellowi.com/GreenCo/Ancestors/Album/Album3.htm |
