Following are news items pertaining to vital information - births, marriages, divorces and deaths - from the Stillwater "Democrat" from 14 March through Decembr 1914. The spelling of names is as it appears in the newspapers. The date of the issue will be followed by the items from that issue. The newspaper was printed on Saturday. Complete obituaries and marriages may be abstrated with a note indicating there is a full story (FS) and page number following. The microfilm used was Roll C-771 from the Montana Historical Society.

21 March 1914. Birth - A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Del Woods Wednesday morning. (Page 4)

21 March 1914. Death - Homesteader Killed By Tree Cut Down - J.D. Tremmall was killed while cutting timber last Saturday. He leaves a wife and one child in Tennessee from whom he has been separated several years. Word was telegraphed to them. (FS, p. 1)

28 March 1914. Marriage - Mrs. Pattie Gorton-Gifford and John Renzima Thursday afternoon of last week in Billings at the parsonage of the Congregational Church. (FS, p. 1)

28 March 1914. Marriage - Voclav Tipault and Dosephine Doyen of the Lake Basin were married Thursday morning by Judge Stark. (FS, p. 1)

28 March 1914. Marriage - On Monday a marriage license was issued to Joseph Herpelink and Miss Beulah Martin, both of Stickley, by that accommodating clerk of the courth, Gus Iverson. In the evening at the parsonage of the Congreational church the Rev. W.H.L. Marshall performed the ceremony that joined the couple in the holy bonds of matrimony. (Page 1)

28 March 1914. Death - Lydia Lange, cousin of Dudley White. (FS, p. 1)

4 April 1914. Marriage - A quiet wedding took place at the parsonage of the Congregational church Sunday afternoon of last week, when James Joseph Murphy, of Billings, and Miss Bessie Arnold, of Sutton, W. Va., were joined in wedlock by Rev. W.H.L. Marshall. The couple returned to Billings on No. 4 the same evening. (Page 3)

4 April 1914. Marriage - At 12 noon on Saturday, March 28, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Cunningham, occurred the marriage of their daughter, Maud, to Mr. G.W. Pearson of Lake Basin. (FS, p. 2)

4 April 1914. Death - Mrs. Thomas Dolan, Saturday morning the 28th day of March, 1914. She was born in Minnesota in 1861 and was married in 1883. The family lived in Sissiton, S.D. for several years. Thomas Dolan died in 1898. In 1910 Mrs. Dolan with her family came to Montana. Survivors: James Dolan, Minnie, Elizabeth and a brother Thomas Mallon. (FS, p. 1)

11 April 1914. Marriage - Mr. Jack Bishop returned Thursday and brought with him a charming bride, which was a surprise to every one, as none surmised "Jack" had thoughts of matrimony. The bride is a young lady of Yates, MT., whose name we have failed to learn. They will reside on the groom's homestead, a few miles south of Reed Point. (Page 4)

11 April 1914. Death - Citizen Crosses River Jordan, Fred Schneider aged 34, for the past five years a resident of Columbus and affiliated with his brother Adolph in the hotel business, succumbed to an attack of appendicitis last Saturday, April 4, 1914, in St. Vincent hospital. On Monday morning the funeral services were held at the home of his brother, Adolph, conducted by Rev. R.T. Rauh, of the German-Lutheran church of Billings and interment made in the Riverview cemetery. The deceased was born in Germany and brought to America by his parents and was reared in Iowa where he was married to Martha Nenning in 1896. He leaves a wife and four children - Gertrude, 8 years; Alfred, 7 years; Walter, 5 years; Fredrick Williams, 3 years; brother Adolph and his mother and father who live at Dennison, Iowa. (FS, p. 1)

11 April 1914. Death - Orphia Pratten Answers Call, Orphia, aged 5 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Pratton of Dean, of measles and complications on Monday, April 6th. She was preceded in death by a brother. (FS, p. 1)

18 April 1914. Death - John Pearson Crosses Divide, After two years or more of suffering from stomach trouble, John Pearson closed his eyes in death at 2 o'clock Tuesday morning in his room at the Commercial hotel in this city. He was born June 4, 1862 in Missouri and was reared in Stockton, MO until about 26 years of age. In the fall of 1890 he was married to Savanha, a daughter of Major Pease, who was the Indian agent at the Crow reservation on the Rosebud. He is survived by four daughters - Virgie, Ethel, Helen and Leah. He was buried at the Rosebud cemetery. (FS, p. 1)

2 May 1914. Death - Wednesday afternoon the remains of Miss Isabella E. Clinfelter were laid to rest in Riverview Cemetery at Columbus. Ther funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.H. Marshall of the Congregational church. The deceased was 58 years of age and is survived by a sister, Elva J., together they had resided on the Eli Steinman ranch having just recently taken the place and started in the poultry business. She was not sick very long, life slowly faded away, heart failure was the cause. (Page 5)

2 May 1914. Death - John Harris Died Thursday, At his home, after suffering for some time, John Harris, of Absarokee, died of tubercular perinitis. He was born in Ontario, Canada, May 11, 1880. His family settled in Michigan. He was twice married, his first wife died shortly after the birth of their first child. He settled in Absarokee and in 1910 was married to Minnie Mench, from this union there were two children, Clarke and Wilhelma. He was buried in Rosebud cemetery. (FS, p. 1)

9 May 1914. Marriage - Slip One Over On Their Friends, 2 May, at the rectory of the Catholic church in Billings, Mr. Merle Smith and Miss Florence Westover were married. The ceremony was performed by Father O'Brien. (FS, p. 1)

16 May 1914. Birth - East White River - The population of the White Beaver Country is rapidly increasing. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lester May 8, and a little daughter arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Hart, Wednesday, May 13, and all concerned are doing well which will be glad news to their many friends. (Page 4)

16 May 1914. Birth - Current Local Happenings - Mr. and Mrs. Perry Parsons are the proud parents of an 8 1/2 pound baby girl that arrived at their home last Tuesday. Dr. Payne the attending physician reports both mother and daughter doing fine. (Page 5)

16 May 1914. Marriage - Vern E. Judd Joins Benedicts, Thursday noon Miss Lottie Hufford was united in marriage to Mr. Verne Judd by the Rev. G.W.G. VanWinkle, of the Episcopal church. (FS, p. 1)

30 May 1914. Birth - Current Local Happenings - Mr. and Mrs. James Hedges were blessed with the arrival of a pretty baby girl, Monday. Reports are that everybody is doing fine. (Page 5)

6 June 1914. Death - Zach Brogan Found Dead Under Tree, A railroad crew found a man dead under a tree about three miles out of town. He had in his possession a checker board and book of rules and a well kept diary covering the three previous years. He was about 55 years old and left Columbus 8 May 1914. (FS, p. 1)

13 June 1914. Marriage - Young Business Man Join Rank of Benedicts, Wednesday evening Lloyd Chaffin, manager of the Columbus Drug Co. store, left for Harlowtown where he will be married to Miss Winifred Nichols, of that city, Sunday, June 14th, at the home of the bride. (FS, p. 1)

20 June 1914. Baptism - Sparks from Twin Buttes - Rev. Madsen of Absarokee called at Mrs. B. Gudmunsons recently and baptized the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Gudmunson. (Page 3)

20 June 1914. Marriage - This community was pleasantly surprised to hear of the recent marriage of Miss Florence Rosencrans who has a claim in section twenty, to Jack Deerhamer of Oelwein, Iowa. Mr. Deerhamer is not a stranger here as he has shown his interest in section 20 by having visited this country oft times. (Page 3)

27 June 1914. Marriage - At the Columbus depot shortly before midnight Saturday, a double wedding, Katherin Shelton and Joseph L. McClellan and Mary Wysong and Charles O. March. (FS, p. 1)

27 June 1914. Marriage - Monday morning of this week, Wm. C. Arnold and Margaret Haugen at the courthouse. (FS, p. 1)

27 June 1914. Marriage - LeRoy Palmer and Miss Helen Inlay, both of Reed Point, by Rev. Marshall. (FS, p. 1)

27 June 1914. Marriage - Mr. Ray Harris and Miss Grace Young, Wednesday morning, by Rev. Marshall at the Congregational parsonage. (FS, p. 1)

27 June 1914. Marriage - After disposing of the Columbus Cafe the first of June and going to Wyoming, Mrs. Artie Hufford and Clyde Castille were joined in wedlock on the seventh day of June. Friends of the contracting party were very quiet of the affair and "Casey Jones" as the groom is known, has been busy making explanations, and with his wife has been receiving hearty congratulations from their many friends. After being married in Cody the couple visited Bozeman with friends and relatives and returned to Columbus the first of the week where they will make their home. (Page 1)

27 June 1914. Marriage - Mr. and Mrs. John Kiehl and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Keihl arrived in Columbus Wednesday evening from Two Dot, making the journey by automobile. Mr. and Mrs. John Kiehl are enjoying the bliss of honeymoon having been married in Big Timber Wednesday afternoon and immediately journeying to this city where they will visit with Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Spriy, who is the mother of John and Edgar Keihl. (Page 5)

4 July 1914. Birth - The stork visited the ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Adams last week and left a bouncing baby boy and everybody in the home are well pleased at the gift. (Page 5)

4 July 1914. Marriage - Miss Grace Cowell and Mr. Nicholas Weber were married in Columbus Sunday, June 28th. (Page 2)

4 July 1914. Marriage - At the home of Mr. Grant Irwin this week a quiet affair took place when Miss Edna M. Shute became Mrs. Fenton G. Warner, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. W.H.I. Marshall of the Congregational church. The newlyweds hail from Duluth, Minn., the bride has been visiting at the Irwin home for some time. (Page 5)

4 July 1914. Marriage - Lake Basin News - Mr. Marston took Miss Clement into matrimony. (Page 5)

4 July 1914. Death - Mrs. M.A. Jacobs Answers Call, Last Tuesday, with services conducted by Rev. G.W. Vanwinkle at the opera house. The deceased was Hannah Francis Cornell and was born in the state of New York in 1865. She was married to Michael A. Jacobs in 1885, in the city of Chicago, Ill. There were two children: Harry and Lillian who is now Mrs. DeGroat of Three Forks. (FS, p. 1)

18 July 1914. Death - Boy Dies of Injuries, George, the eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Colgrove of Rapids died in this city early Sunday morning at the residence of Dr. George Payne. Death as a result of an auto accident. Funeral services from the Congregational church with interment in the local cemetery. (FS, p. 4)

8 August 1914. Birth - Early Tuesday morning the stork visited the home of Clyde Russell, who resides on the Cammack ranch south of this city, and left a baby girl. (Page 4)

22 August 1914. Birth and Death - A baby boy born to Mr. and Mrs. George Morrison, at their ranch on Keyser creek last Saturday night, died on Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Morrison have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. (Page 5)

29 August 1914. Marriage - Beasley-Kelley Nuptials, Miss Gladys A. Kelley to Mr. Harley W. Beasley. The marriage was solemized at the home of the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Runner, at Absarokee and performed by Rev. C.N. Conkle of the Absarokee Congregational church. (FS, p. 1)

29 August 1914. Marriage - Mr. J.A. Russell of Park City to Mrs. Lela Bartholf, of Loveland, Colorado. The couple was married at Chadron, Nebraska. (FS, p. 4)

29 August 1914. Death - Mrs. VanHout, who resided on a ranch about eight miles southeast of this city, died last Sunday, being a victim of consumption. She is survived by two daughters ages 15 and 10 years. (FS, p. 4)

12 September 1914. Birth - Mr. and Mrs. Donton are the proud parents of a baby girl, born at the Billings hospital. (Page 4)

26 September 1914. Marriage - Mr. C.T. Trott, proprietor of the Trott Printing Co., Billings, was married to Miss Emma Gustofferson, at the Episcopal rectory, Wednesday evening of this week. (FS, p. 5)

3 October 1914. Marriage - Pleasant Wedding on the Lower Stillwater, At the home of the groom on the Showen ranch, south of Columbus, occured the marriage of Mr. Fred Borland and Miss Effie Ellis, of Nye. The wedding occured last Tuesday at high noon, Rev. A.T. Peck officiating. (FS, p. 1)

10 October 1914. Marriage - At the Congregational parsonage Wednesday evening, Arthur Dennis and Miss Josie Wilkinson of Absarokee were united in marriage, the Rev. Marshall officiating. (Page 5)

10 October 1914. Death - George Pitcher Killed By His Wife, George Pitcher, for many years a character about Big Timber, was shot and instantly killed by his wife on Wednesday afternoon of this week. Pitcher and his wife were married about seven years ago. (FS, p. 1)

17 October 1914. Marriage - At the home of the groom's mother, Mrs. M.E. Spry, Mr. Raymond Kiehl and Miss May Gray were united in marriage at 6:30 last Saturday evening, Justice Geo. H. Simpson officiating. Mr. Kiehl, who has resided on the Stillwater for many years, manages the mountain end on the Stillwater stage route, from Fishtail to Nye; the bride has been a resident of Absarokee. The newly married couple will reside at Nye. The Democrat extends congratulations. (Page 1)

24 October 1914. Marriage - At the Congregational parsonage Wednesday evening, Mr. Alfonzo R. Marley and Mrs. Pearle Stofer, both of Big Timber, were united in marriage, the Rev. W.H.I. Marshall officiating. The groom is a son of John Marley, one of the pioneers of Big Timber, and has been a resident of Sweet Grass county since boyhood. The bride is also well and favorably known there. The newly married couple departed for Big Timber Thursday noon and will reside on a ranch on Deer Creek. (Page 1)

31 October 1914. Birth - Dr. and Mrs. A.V. Blackstone, of Absarokee, are rejoicing over the acquisition of a dandy baby girl, which arrived at their home Tuesday night of this week. (Page 3)

31 October 1914. Marriage - Pearl Green and Ben Wagner were married Wednesday in the Congregational parsonage in Billings, the Rev. Walter North officiating. (FS, p. 2)

31 October 1914. Marriage - Mr. George W. Davis and Miss Belle Rosean were united in marriage at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The ceremony was performed by Justice Geo. H. Simpson. (FS, p. 2)

7 November 1914. Birth - The stork made a pleasant visit in Columbus this past week and left two bouncing baby boys, one at the home of Attorney Geo. A. Westover, Saturday night, and another at the home of George Wimsett, Sunday night. We have smoked to the health of both these little gentlemen. (Page 5)

7 November 1914. Birth - Busteed Items - We have another citizen in the basin. Mrs. Jack Deerhammer was the recipient of a little baby girl when the stork called on Wednesday, the 21st. (Page 5)

7 November 1914. Marriage - Brown-Haugen, On last Sunday, Mr. Elmer Brown and Miss Nora Haugen were united in marriage. The ceremony was proformed (sic) at 2:00 p.m. in the Congregational parsonage, the Rev. W.H.L. Marshall officiating. (FS, p. 4)

7 November 1914. Marriage - Gibbs-Jones, Mr. George Gibbs, of Lake Basin, and Miss Rebecca Frances Jones were united in marriage at the Congregational Parsonage on Tuesday evening, of this week, the Rev. W.H.L. Marshall officiating. (FS, p. 4)

7 November 1914. Marriage - Unger-Weaver, Miss Nellie Weaver of Reed Point, and Mr. O.K. Unger of Laurel, were united in marriage in Billings last Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Logan, the ceremony was performed by the Rev. Walter North, of the Billings Congregational church. (FS, p. 4)

7 November 1914. Marriage - Pickett-Evans, Everett C. Pickett, of Erie, Kan., and Edna E. Evans, of Lake Basin, were married in this city on Monday. Justice Simpson performing the ceremony. The bride is well and favorably known in the Lake Basin country and the groom, we understand, contemplates locating in this vicinity. (Page 4)

7 November 1914. Marriage - Gibson-Emory, On Friday night of last week Fred Gibson, of this city, and Miss Bessie Emory, a daughter of the Hawkeye state, were married in Billings. The groom, who is a son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Gibson of this place, has a fine ranch on Countryman creek, and with his bride have taken up their residence on the same. (Page 4)

14 November 1914. Birth - Josua Herington, with a very pleasant smile, informed the Democrat, Tuesday, that he was now "grand-pa". A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Stewart of Reed Point, Monday night, was the reason. (Page 3)

14 NOvember 1914. Marriage - A marriage license was issued to Goedon Grimm and Adeline A. Phillips by Clerk Gus Iverson, Wednesday. The groom gave his residence as Missoula, Montana, and the bride was a resident of Grangville, Idaho. They were married by Judge John Bohn. (Page 3)

14 November 1914. Marriage - Harry Fields, of the Billings Tribune, and Miss Grace Woods were married in this city last Saturday at the Congregational parsonage, Rev. Marshall officiating. The newly-weds will reside in Billings. (Page 5)

14 NOvember 1914. Death - Mrs. Tony Kuhulie, sister of Mrs. Pat Quinn of this city, died at ther (home) in Hogan, Wis., last week. The deceased, who was Lizzie Leimbach, resided in Columbus some years ago. She is survived by a husband and six children. (Page 3)

21 November 1914. Divorce - Due to the non-appearance of the defendant in the divorce suit, Louisia a Jewett (sic) of Fishtail was granted a decree of absolute divorce from CharlesL. Jewett of Los Angeles, Cal., by Judge Stark last Monday evening. (FS, p. 1)

28 November 1914. Birth - Busters at Busteed - A bonnie baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles West on Monday night of this week. (Page 8)

28 November 1914. Marriage - Van Winkle-Rieman, Mr. Joseph Van Winkle, son of the Rev. G.W.G. Van Winkle, rector of St. Pauls Episcopal church of this city, was united in marriage to Mrs. Minnie Reiman, at Billings on Saturday morning of last week, Nov. 21. The wedding ceremony was said in St. Lukes church by the groom's father, assisted by the Rev. J. Phillip Anshutz. (FS, p. 4)

5 December 1914. Birth - The stork called at the home of Mrs. Chas. West and delivered the goods in the shape of a bouncing baby girl early Monday morning. Dr. Payne of Columbus was in attendance. (Page 4)

5 December 1914. Birth - Sunday morning a baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Lutzenheiser of this city. (Page 5)

5 December 1914. Marriage - Miss Nola Hager, daughter of Mrs. N.R. Manchester of this city, was married in Livingston on Thanksgiving day to Mr. Austin A. Dowley. (FS, p. 1)

5 December 1914. Death - On Monday of this week, Wm. Lavelle, residing on his homestead on Countryman creek, died of tumor of the brain, after an illness of several weeks. (Page 1)

19 December 1914. Birth - A baby boy was born to Dr. and Mrs. Payne Wednesday morning. (Page 5)

19 December 1914. Marriages - Dan Cupid, through his official assistant, Gus Iverson, clerk of the court, has succeeded during the week in quickening the heart-beat of a number of nuptial aspirants by granting them marriage licenses. The couples of secured licenses were, Marcus A. Macdough and Pearl Bailey of Broadview; Fredrick Weber of Atica and Elva Phillips of Bolder, Colo.; Edward D. Fink and Hazel Dinsmore of Park City, and William B. Wendt of Reed Point and Minnie Hodson of Livingston. (Page 1)

19 December 1914. Death - Pioneer Dies at Ripe Old Age, Word was received here Saturday of the death of E.J. Southworth, one of the old pioneers of the Stillwater valley at his home at Nye. He has been ailing for the past few weeks, and his death has been expected daily. He has been a long residence of the valley and was well known throughout the country. He is survived by a wife and three sons, Fred, Ralph and Frank. (Page 1)

19 December 1914. Death - Park City Items, W.C. Seales died at the home of his son-in-law, Frank W. Pierce, in Lake Basin last Saturday after an illness of some months. He was born in New Year (sic) Sept. 24, 1824. He crossed the plains in 1949 (sic) and went to Walla Walla valley, Washington in 1853. He was 90 years, 2 months and 21 days old when he died. His body was brought back to Park City Monday morning and was shipped to Yetts City, Ill., for interment, where he was placed by the side of his wife, who had passed on before him. The body was accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Frank W. Pierce, to their old home in Illinois. (Page 3)

26 December 1914. Marriage - Married in Columbus, Miss Esther Lambert and Orville Pace were married in Columbus Wednesday. (FS, p. 1)

26 December 1914. Marriage - Olson-Ainley, Hans Olson and Hazel Ainley were married last Wednesday in Billings. (FS, p. 1)
