Mystery photograph/mystery location. Photo courtesy of Robert Emerick.

Robert Emerick of Wolcottville IN asks: Is there a stone bridge in or near the city of Choteau? I have a picture of William Emerick sitting on a stone bridge with some trees and mountains in the background.

Is it possible the picture of the bridge, is the St. Mary River Bridge, on Rt. 89, which is at Glacier National Park, Glacier County, MT?

William A. (Alexander) Emerick and Goldie made the trip to Glacier National Park the year of 1954, as told to me by a niece of Goldie Emerick Race.

We want to help Robert locate the mystery location.

Bill Emerick (Page 172 Teton County History Book)
Sources: Choteau Acantha Feb. 28, 1935, Jan. -, 1957.

William N. "Bill" Emerick was born Nov. 25, 1874 in Ashland Co., Ohio. When he first came to Montana he lived in Great Falls, Missoula, and Hamilton, and during the "Big Ditch" boom in the Bitterroot he had a studio in the old Family Theater building in Hamilton. He conducted a photographic studio in Choteau for 45 years, retiring in 1954 [Transcriber note: which would mean he came to Choteau in 1909.] During these years he recorded the passing scene photographically with a craftsman's finesse.

His first wife died in childbirth and he was preceded in death by a son and a daughter. His second wife was born Julia Smith at Gainsville, Georgia, on Aug. 4, 1876, and was the mother of Louis and Edward DeNayer. She died in Choteau on Feb. 20, 1935. Bill died Jan. 8, 1957 as the result of stroke.
