Information
& Sorts Revised 10 October 2002 (Custer County Added)

| Census data extracted from the 1880 Federal Records does not quite match the information reported by that census, due primarily to omissions and voided entries created by the census takers and extractor personnel. Included are the crossed-out entries noted by the census takers, and they are so noted, plus personnel from selected military posts not included in the formal 1880 data.. The Federal Census for Montana was reported to NOT contain any Native Americans, however; that statement is interpreted to only mean: “No Reservation Indians were counted.” The following table was created from the Federal 1880 Census Guide book. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Variances
by County: Notes: (1) The numerical count is 2719; however, there were approximately seven missing numerical entries in the original count. These were identified as A, B, C, etc., and added as entries. Beaverhead military post personnel were added to the listing. (2) Duplicate numbers were used in the original count, under-estimating the true total. (3) Cotton Wood Creek and City of Butte were not extracted. (4) Upper Yellowstone Valley was not extracted. (5) Cannot explain. There are 1,000 more listed on the forms than reported. (6) Helena Township not extracted. (7) Illegible entries prevented copying the information. (8) No records were extracted. * Includes Baker’s Ground, Huntley, Coulson and Clarke’s Fork Bottom. |

Comments regarding Custer County Records:The three Census Districts are separated into the following local areas within the County, and are viewable in adobe.pdf format (Original documents are of very poor quality and will not convert to text): Clarks Fork Bottom – This area is sub-divided into separate districts where the population is mainly concentrated, but the census taker combined the three main districts into one: · Residences 1 - 36 of persons living along the Yellowstone River below Coulson. Although not named, this appears to be the population centered around “Canyon” [pgs 1-2] · Residences 37 – 47 of persons living in Coulson and Vicinity (50 people) [pg 3] · Residences 48 – 54 of additional persons living in Clarks Fork Bottom plus four residences missed earlier [pgs 3-4] · Residences 55 – 60 of persons living in Bakers’ Battle Ground and Huntley [pgs 3-4] · Residences 61 – 69 of persons living in Junction City and Sage Brush Bottom [pg4] · Residences 70 – 100 of persons living in Etcheta & Pease Bottom, plus Froze to Death Creek Area [pgs 4-7] Miles City– Persons near the River · Residences 1 – 10, 50 persons in the area Inhabitants of the 7th Enumeration District, consisting of 52 residences Inhabitants of Fort Keogh, segregated by families and soldiers, residences are not listed Inhabitants of Fort Custer, segregated by families and soldiers, residences are not listed Inhabitants of Fort Custer Valley, segregated by families.
