YELLOWSTONE COUNTY, MONTANA GENWEB PROJECT

CARBON COUNTY NEWSPAPER OBITUARY FILE LOCATORS

Pompeys Pillar

During the research for burial information and cemetery locations within Carbon County performed by the Yellowstone Genealogy Forum in the 1980’s, a substantial amount of research for obituaries in the local newspapers at Red Lodge was accomplished. Many of these obituaries were used to crosscheck the validity of information obtained from funeral homes and cemetery lists. There are about 200 pages of lists describing the location and date of these obituaries. The information is presented in Adobe PDF format (copied to permit future translation into text), and identifies the newspaper and date(s) for the obituary by individual. The listings are in various arrangements. Please verify the spellings,  dates and other information by crosschecking the actual Obituary File Listings.

Bureau of Records & Statistics (Helena, MT)

The Bureau provided seven pages of obituaries from their files for the years from April 1994 through September 1986. These files depict individual Names, DOB, DOD and age; identified by monthly groupings throughout this period. Unfortunately the Bureau of Records did not know where the obituary was reported, nor the date of the listing or burial place of the individuals. So it’s usefulness is extremely limited. Most persons were born in the late 1880’s through the early 1900’s.

Fromberg Herald (1908 – 1955)

The Fromberg Herald occasionally reported a limited number of obituaries from nine neighboring local towns.  The following were extracted from that newspaper and are listed on three pages.

§       Belfry – 1908, 1911 & 1949

§       Boyd – 1923 & 1936

§       Bridger – 1918 – 1954

§       Edgar – 1915 – 1951

§       Joliet – 1917 – 1948

§       Pryor – 1919, 1927, 1939 & 1945

§       Roberts – 1919

§       Rockvale – 1914, 1918 & 1937

§       Silesia – 1920, 1930, 1931, 1933, 1937 & 1946

The Fromberg Herald reported obituaries from Fromberg itself starting in 1908. The following obituaries were extracted annually through 1955, and are listed on seven pages.

Carbon County News (1963 Only)

A separate extraction for the 1963-year lists persons from AHO through WOLFE, and covers the towns of Fox, Red Lodge, Absarokee, Joliet, Fromberg, Roberts, Glendive, Reed Point, Bearcreek, and Belfry. There are two pages of listings.
