May 16th, 2000 MEETING

By-law changes and election of officers will be voted on at our May 16th meeting which celebrates our 23rd Anniversary.

To help inform all our members, this newsletter is one of the largest containing the proposed changes. A committee has worked hard for several months to simplify and make a framework so that YGF can adapt and continue in less than ideal circumstances as we've done this past year without a president.

Please read our newsletter and come to the meeting as informed members. We need cooperation in all facets of our organization to make it successful.

The Nominating Committee consists of Myrle Theimer (chairman), P.J. Smith, and Louise LaRue. They present the following slate:

President - Suzanne McPherson

Corresponding Secretary - Peggy Williams and Pat Miller

Program Chairman - Athna May Porter

Recording Secretary - Joyce Nitschke

Treasurer - Shannon Behounek

VOLUNTEERS

We have some folks who deserve three cheers,
They give of themselves,
They are volunteers!
While some of us can't and some of us won't,
Whate'er our reasons, a lot of us don't. So let us now honor
Those who conquer their fears
And gladly serve others--
Our good volunteers!

LIBRARIAN'S CORNER

An impressive large 4-volume set entitled, "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files" abstracted by Virgil D. White is highly recommended. If you remember back, 3 of our members--Athna May Porter, Evagene Emmett and Myrle Theimer worked an election and their earnings plus some additional from YGF paid for this worthy project. The pages are about 9 x 11 inches with a total of 5265 pages making the set. These books cover A-E, F-M, N-Z plus an index. In the front is a list of abbreviations used and introduction. At the back of the index are a few pages of corrections and additions plus all the Roll Numbers if you're interested in going back to the source.

If you have people the right age to have been in the Revolutionary War, take time to check this index. You might be pleasantly surprised.

ANYONE NEED RIDE?

Roy Oliver, our Calling Chairman, reports that it is easier to use e-mail for notification of meetings than phoning. It also takes less callers. If you have e-mail, please give us your address. We would still like to offer rides to any member who wants one to attend our meetings. If you need a ride call Roy at 245-5516.

HOW I SOLVED IT

Looking For a Marriage Record???

My grandparents were married in St. Louis, Mo. in November 1889, but I could not find a marriage license for them.

The church record I had on my grandparents' marriage was just a copy of the original and a bad copy at that. The writing on the record was very faint and very hard to read. I had written many, many letters in trying to locate the marriage application or license with no results.

So, I decided to write the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. in hopes of locating what church the priest was at for that time period in St. Louis. In response, I received 2 pages from the "Hoffmann's Catholic Directory, Almanac" for 1890. A page of the "Archdiocese of St. Louis" listed the priest I was looking for and also listed the church and address in St. Louis.

I immediately wrote the church and was sent the page showing the listing for their marriage. I was then able to locate their license in the St. Louis Newspaper from the State Historical Society of Missouri and got their application for marriage from the county of St. Louis, and then found their license on film. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!

HAMBURG PORT

Do you think Hamburg, Germany might have been your ancestor's emigration port?

The Hamburg Emigration Lists are a data bank which includes the personal data of 5 million people who emigrated via Hamburg from 1850 to 1934. It will be made available for your personal use in April 2000, starting with the years 1890-1893.

This data bank will then grow, on a regular basis, year by year. The first phase will include the data on emigrants from 1890 to 1914. At a later data the years 1850 to 1934 will be included and all of it will be accessible on the Internet as well. As soon as you've found the name you are looking for you may obtain complete details (where they came from, profession, age, etc.)

Inform yourself via the Internet on Hamburg as the port of emigration as well as the project itself, at:
