REMEMBERING.....
Memorial
Day, just past, is a time of honoring and remembering those who have died. YGF has published the obituaries of
deceased members since October 1982.
As we read the list, many of us will recall a moment when each of these
persons brought a smile, a chuckle, a bit of wisdom, taught a class, attended a
seminar or some activity that left their special imprint upon us.

GONE
BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
FALL
GENEALOGY CONFERENCE COMING
The
12th annual Montana State Genealogical Society's Conference will be held
September 7-8, 2001 at the GranTree Inn, Bozeman. The usual spring schedule is being changed to fall.
The
State Society has asked us to mail the Conference information to our
members. Hence, please find
enclosed 4 pages including the registration form, which can be cut and mailed
to MSGS, c/o Nancy Alley, P.O. Box 989, Boulder, Mt. 59632. We are mailing it with the Gen-Bug
newsletter to save postage rather than to require two mailings close together.
Genealogists
are encouraged to stay at the GranTree as some credit toward conference class
rooms will be made. Be sure to
mention you are attending this conference when reserving rooms to get the
conference rate.
Conference
speakers' credentials sound quite impressive and there's a good mix of classes
from which to choose. Please study
their backgrounds and the subjects that fit you best. What with Bozeman just a few miles down the road, it is
hoped that many YFG members will want to attend. Conferences are a fun way to learn besides meeting old and
new friends! This might be a way
of seeing what it takes to host the state conference come September 2002. Hope to see you there!!!
From your President:
This past year has been very
exciting for YGF. Our programs
have been very good and we have harvested some great new members. Our web site is managed well and there
seems to be no end to the information that is on it! The queries are coming into the site and has made it much
simpler for us to research for those who live outside of our area needing help.
This next year we once again have
a change in the board. I must say,
it looks like another great group of people to work with. We will continue to function without a
program chairman, which means that the board will be seeking out people to
present our programs. If you are
interested in holding this position or if you would be willing to share your
expertise with the rest of us, let me know.
We are hoping to put together
another internet program in September.
This will include the ins and outs of 'surfing" for your Ellis
Island records, advantages of 'cut and paste', and a handout on 'new' sites for
researchers. If you are tired of
printing out a map from the internet and then having to tape it together to see
it in full, this will be a program you won't want to miss!
The YGF picnic is coming up, so
gather your gen stories from the past year and bring them along. We'd all love to hear how you solved
the greatest family mystery.
Alot more fun and learning is
coming this next year, so join the rest of us who 'just wanted to know where
our ancestors REALLY came from', 10 years ago.
Your President,
Suzanne

HOW
I SOLVED IT
I
don't think this is an article on how I solved a genealogy problem, but rather
on how a genealogy problem was solved by accident! I had been searching for the maiden name of my maternal
grandfather's grandmother for years.
My great-grandparents migrated to the Bozeman, Mt. area in the
mid-1890's. My great-grand-father
died in 1898, before Montana had death records. I was at a loss as to how to ever find his mother's maiden
name.
My
grandfather's obituary stated that his brother had died in Bozeman in 1940. I decided to find his death record,
thinking I could learn more about the brother's family. I went to the Bozeman Court House, and
asked to see a copy of his death certificate. They wouldn't let me look through the records, but went in a
room where I could see them look, and came out saying there was no death record
for him. I asked the lady to
please look again, as I was quite sure when he died and where. After looking again, the lady was a bit
frustrated, and held up the only death record she had with the Lord
surname. It wasn't the name I was
asking about, but a Jared Lord.
Can you imagine my elation when she told me that, as I told her that was
my great grandfather!! She made a
copy for me, and can you believe that on the death record was, indeed, the
maiden name of his mother. The
reason that there was a record for him was because he had been buried on his
farm, then re-interred and buried in the Bozeman cemetery, requiring a death
certificate for him.

Now that I have a computer for my
genealogical records, I find that my records are just as confused as before,
however, now my confusion is better organized.
