Welcome to the Yellowstone County, Montana Cemetery reference page and
index. Here you will find links to the detailed cemetery records and their
locations that are available in Yellowstone County. Click on the referenced
topics, and you will be directed to the link for that address.

Browser BACK button to return to this page.
The Forum also performed extensive research in Carbon County, and those
cemetery record details are included. The Forum also supports fieldwork
performed at other cemetery locations in the United States, and from
time-to-time those records are added to the site. Currently we have some burial
listing extractions from Harper’s Ferry, Liberty County, and neighboring towns,
most of which were originally in Yellowstone County.
General Information
Yellowstone County has 28 registered cemeteries, and numerous unlisted private
ones [1995]. Burial information from many of these ‘unlisted’ cemeteries has
been extracted, but their locations have not been identified so as to protect
the current landowners’ wishes. The listing below identifies the types or
records available, their location, and if the details are available on line. If
“lookups” are needed, when the source material is only in hard-copy, a link
will be provided to identify where to email for information; and if research
costs are applicable. The Forum maintains an extensive listing of various
obituaries, as well as an index for many others in the region. The linkages to
this information are provided herein.
Cemeteries shown in RED are basically inactive or abandoned.
There are several ways to check ancestral burials in Yellowstone County.
Additionally, there are several active and inactive cemeteries within
Yellowstone County. A description of these grave locations is available in the YGF Cemetery Site.
Listings of Obituary
postings from the Carbon County area, generated when the Yellowstone Genealogy Forum created a master file
for the cemetery records in the 1980’s, is tabulated in a separate listing for
reference to the newspaper or other sources. There are about 200 pages of
listings for these source records. Most of the files can be obtained from the
Carbon County Genealogy Society sources.
Mountview Cemetery, the main Billings city cemetery, has provided their
list of burials through the mid-1990s and we have placed them in the MTGenWeb
Project Archives for your free use. The files are segregated
alphabetically, and displayed in TEXT format. Information is updated annually,
and is readily available at the Parmly Library, YGF GenRoom, or the Cemetery in
‘hard copy’. For pictures of the cemetery, and tombstone date transcriptions,
refer to the Yellowstone
Genealogy Forum site. Many of the other cemeteries within the area,
extending about 100 miles around Yellowstone County have had their records
transcribed, and most all of the tombstone inscriptions have been recorded.
These are not in numerical order; but if interested, the Webmaster will do
limited lookups in the master files.
For active and past burials in either Smith Terrace Gardens Memorial
Estates or Sunset Memorial Gardens, (not listed in the books), the addresses

microfilm registers are available within the Library. Card Index files for
obituaries from 1955 through 1969 are sorted, and list birth, death, marriage,
spouse, parents and children. Subsequent years contain the obituary notice
published in local newspapers. These are stored in two separate locations, and
are clearly marked. Added are 1994 through Current date.
Cemetery Records for Mountview, Yellowstone County Cemeteries, Carbon County and Harpers Ferry Cemetery in West Virginia, are available or placed on line. The collection of Carbon County records stored on 3x5 cards, contain information about the person, burial location, and other information as available.
Cemetery Records for Liberty County are available.
On-Line Cemetery Records for Montana, Wyoming and other States are being placed on the web for researchers use. This site complements the other available sites, and contains many of the above listed cemeteries. Be sure to check here.
