WAS AT BATTLE OF BEAR PAW

Comrade A. J. Davis, of Norfolk, Va., sends us the following clipping regarding a participant in the Bear Paw scrimmage, and adds "you might tell the editor that Comrades Simmons and Davis are still on foot, and able to think and talk yes indeed, talk-a-plenty."

"Jack Johnson Was in Battle of Bear's Paw"

A Scout for Miles

J. W. Johnson of Soldiers' Home is one of the few veterans still on earth who participated in the battle of the Bear's Paw, which occurred 53 years ago, September 30. The Snake Creek battlefield is 16 miles south of Chinook and a boulder monument now marks the point where Chief Joseph mad his last stand against the whites under the leadership of Gen. Nelson A. Miles.

J. W. Johnson was a government scout and had a pal with him at the time, Chas. A Smith of Harlem, another of the few men living who were present during the encounter. Mr. Smith was engaged in convoying supplies from the Missouri river to the troops. Smith is on the arrangement committee preparing for the anniversary and has written Comrade Johnson urging his attendance at the celebration."
