Between The Regular Army of the United States and Various Tribes of Hostile Indians Especially During the Years 1838 to 1898 Inclusive. As Reported By The Various Department Commanders To The Office of the Adjutant General of the Army Washington, D.C.

List of these engagements have been appearing in the issues of "Winner of the West" beginning with the month of October, 1936, and will continue from month to month until all of such known engagements have been published, when it is intended to issue them in the form of a well bound book, handy for reference. January 20 Delaware Creek, Guadalupe Mountains, Texas. Detachments of Trs. C, D, I, and K, 9th U.S. Cav. Capt. F.S. Dodge in command. Soldiers wounded, 2.
January 23 Piegan Camp, Marias River, Mont. Action with Blackfeet Indians at camps of Bear Chief and Big Horn. Trs. F, G, H, and L, 2nd U.S. Cav.; Cos. A, F< I, and K, 13th U.S. Infty. Major E.M. Baker, 2nd U.S. Cav., in command. Burned the camp of Mountain Chief. Troops marched for the Northwest Fur Cos. Station, arriving January 25. Col Baker sent for the chiefs of the Bloods and asked them to give up all stolen stock. The column reached Ft. Ellis February 6 after a march of about 600 miles. Soldiers killed, 2.

April 2 Headwaters of Sweetwater, Wyo. Citizens killed, 6.
April 3 San Martine Springs, Texas Detachment of Tr. H, 9th U.S. Cav. Non-commissioned officer in command. Indians killed, 1.
April 3 North Hubbard Creek, Texas. Detachment of Tr. F, 4th U.S. Cav. Capt. Wirt Davis in command. Indians killed, 2.

April 23 Kansas. A railroad working party were attacked by Indians, who were repulsed by the military guards. No casualties.

April 30 Pinal Mountains, near San Carlos, Ariz. Detachment of Tr. E, 1st U.S. Cav.; Detachment of Tr. B, 3rd U.S. Cav; and Detachment of 21st U.S. Infty. Capt. G.B. Sanford, 1st U.S. Cav., in command. Indians killed, 11.

May 4 Miner's Delight, near Twin Creek, Wyo. Tr. D, 2nd U.S. Cav. Capt. D.S. Gordon in command. Lieut. C.B. Stambaugh, 2nd U.S. Cal., killed. Soldiers wounded, 1.

May 14 Mount Adams, Texas Detachment of Tr. M, 4th U.S. Cav. Lieut. Wm. Russell, Jr., in command. Lieut. Russell, Jr. mortally wounded. Soldiers wounded, 2.
May 16 Kansas Pacific Railroad Indians made a concerted attack along the railroad for a distance of 30 miles, killing 10 persons and running off about 300 animals. A troop of cavalry pursued the Indians to the Republican River, Nebr., but without success. Persons killed, 10
May 17 Spring Creek, or Little Blue, Nebr. Detachment of Tr. C, 2nd U.S. Cav. Sergt. P. Leonard in command. Sergt. Leonard and 4 men of Tr. C, 2nd Cav., while searching for strayed horses, were suddenly surrounded and fired upon by a party of 50 Indians. Private Hubbard and 2 horses wounded at first fire. Sergeant turned horses over to Hubbard. Indians repulsed. Sergeant killed the 2 wounded horses and formed a breastwork of them. Indians again charged. Kept it up for 2 hours and retired. Sergeant took in charge a Settlers family and made his way to Capt. Spaulding's camp. Soldiers wounded, 1.

May 18 Lake Station, Colo. Indians attacked the station and were pursued by a party of cavalry without success.
May 19-20 Kickapoo Springs, Texas Detachment of Tr. F, 9th U.S. Cav. Sergt. E. Stance in command. Indians wounded, 4.
May 21 Hugo Station, Colo. Was attacked by Indians, who were repulsed.
May 25 Tonto Valley, Ariz. Tr. E, 1st U.S. Cav.; Tr. E, 3rd U.S. Cav. Capt. G.B. Sanford, 1st U.S. Cav., in command.  Indians killed, 21.

May 28 Near Camp Supply, Indian Territory. Indians attacked a train, stampeded all the mules and killed one man. The same day they ran off a quantity of stock near the post and killed another man. Citizens killed, 2.
May 29 Bass Canyon, Texas Tr. K, 9th U.S. Cav. Lieut. I.W. Trask in command. Soldiers killed, 1.
May 29-June 26 Near Camp Apache, Ariz. Detachment of Tr. A, 3rd U.S. Cav. Capt. Wm. Hawley in command. Indians wounded, 1.

June 3 Department of the Missouri A Mexican was killed and scalped. A train was attacked, a teamster killed, and 40 mules stampeded, and Capt. Armes, 10th U.S. Cav., being separated from his escort, was attacked and chased, but escaped.
June 5 Apache Mountain, Ariz. Detachment of Tr. K, 1st U.S. Cav.; and Detachments of Trs. B and F, 3rd U.S. Cav. Lieut. H. B. Cushing, 3rd U.S. Cav., in command. Indians killed, 30.
June 5 Black Canyon, Ariz. Detachment of Tr. M, 3rd U.S. Cav. Lieut. J.C. Graham in command. Indians killed, 2.
June 6 Near Camp Supply, Indian Territory. An attack on a train was repulsed. At night the Indians again attacked the train and were driven off. They captured 13 mules. Indians wounded, 2.
June 8 Between Ft. Dodge, Kans., and Camp Supply, Indian Territory. Trs. F and H, 10th U.S. Cav. Lieut. J.A. Bodamer in command. Soldiers wounded, 2.

June 11 Near Bunker Hill Station, Kans. Cavalry couriers carrying dispatches were attacked and chased into the station.
June 11 Near Grinnell Station, Kans. A train escorted by cavalry was attacked by Indians, who were repulsed after a fight of 3 hours. No casualties.
June 13 Ft. Buford, Dakota Cos. C, E, and H, 13th U.S. Infty. Lieut. Col. H.A. Morrow in command. Citizens wounded, 4.

June 13 Grinnell, Kans. Detachment of Tr. M, 7th U.S. Cav. Encountered a band of Indians. The advance troop attacked the Indians who, however, escaped with a loss of one pony killed.
June 15 Near Ft. Bascom, N.M. Indians plundered a ranch. Five horses stolen. Indians fired upon by guard, but escaped. Citizens killed, 1.
June 15 East branch of Rio Verde, Ariz. Tr. E, 3rd U.S. Cav. Capt. Alex Sutorious in command.
June 16 Mulberry Creek, Kans. Indians killed three wood-choppers.
June 18 North Platte, Nebr. Tr. E, 2nd U.S. Cav. Capt. E.R. Wells in command. Indians wounded, 1.
June 21 Near Carson, Colo. Indians attacked a Mexican train and killed five teamsters. Cavalry pursued next day, but without success.
