TAPS

As we go to press all hearts at National Headquarters are saddened on receipt of a letter from Past Commander in Chief John H. Brandt, Los Angeles, bringing the first intelligence of the death of Comrade John G. van Houton, State Commander, Department of California, Commander of Gen. George Crook Camp No. 9 National Indian War Veterans U.S.A., Los Angeles. Comrade van Houton was born January 9, 1856 and was therefore over 80 years of age at death. He served in the Nez Perces and Bannock Campaign in Co. B 12th U.S Infantry, 1875-1880.

As Adjutant of Camp 9 for over 10 years, then Commander, and State Commander, his service to the organization and to the cause of all Veterans and Widows of Indian Wars has been invaluable. Conservative, loyal, honest and dependable to the highest degree of his ability were his strongest characteristics and such a character in any good work will be long remembered.
