Bassett DNA Project
Updated May 15, 2005
Jeffrey Bassett is looking for someone interested in participating in his DNA project. He is looking for someone who may be related to those BASSETT's who resided on Campobello in the mid 1850-1880 time frame. Jeffrey wrote:
Below is my standard message I send out about my DNA project. I am looking for someone that is willing to share or the cost or pay for a DNA test for a Bassett from your line. I have found a volunteer to take part, but he is not interested in genealogy and doesn't really care about the results, so isn't willing to pay the money. Let me know if you are interested. If you can't fund the whole thing, I might be able to find someone else from your line willing to share the cost.
I have 70 Bassetts taking part in my new Bassett DNA study so far. You can read details about the project below. I am looking for someone from your branch of the family to take part in the test. It is a test on the male y-chromosome passed from father to son and you only qualify if you are a Bassett male.
Here is a link to the new Bassett web page that includes a link showing the initial results of our DNA testing.
Let me know if you know of someone in your family that would be willing to take part.
Here is the information on the DNA project.
-- Subject: DNA project update
I have organized a reduced rate ($99) for DNA testing for testing of the Y-chromosome. Please see the web page for Family Tree DNA at the following address for an explanation of the process. The only requirement is that you are male with the Bassett surname (Y-chromosome test only works on the unbroken male line).
Testing requires no blood work. A small toothbrush like device is sent via the mail and it is scraped on the inside of your mouth and then returned via the mail to the lab.
In effort to try to tie together the many different Bassett lines in the U.S. and Canada, I am leading this test to see what kind of results we will get. 70 different Bassetts from 50 different family lines have so far requested the test. This is for genealogy purposes only. Please see explanation on the Family Tree DNA website for an explanation.
We will present the results in some kind of form so that people can see which family group they belong to. This may help in researching those of you that we have not yet linked to a Bassett branch that has been in this country for several hundred years or have not yet linked you up to an English (or other) ancestor.
See the site below for sample results from the Walker family. The first page gives information on the test.

This second page gives actual results of the test showing relationships between the different Walker families.
If any of you are interested, please let me know. The negotiated rate for our group is $99 per test. I will submit your name and address for testing and they will send you a packet of information. You will send the packet back in along with your payment and if you sign the form then your control number and results will be provided to me to include in the table.
