1. FRANCIS¹ MATTHEWS died Abt. 1804.

Notes for FRANCIS MATTHEWS:

This Francis? was the father of Richard b1770 and Francis Matthews who settled on Campobello about 1785. Richard Matthews, a Loyalist came to St. John on the "Cyrus" with the September fleet. He belonged to the Matthews family who settled early in Newcastle, NH, a branch which went to Portsmouth. The founder in America was Francis Matthews who married Thomasine Channon in Devonshire, England and came over in 1637.

Richard's brother, Francis Matthews joined him on Campobello and their father who had enlisted with the British at Lloyd's Neck in 1780 had been a recruting sergeant in New York, was on the Island for a short time. From "Some Early Campobello Families" by and other notes from an unpublished manuscript written by Mary Gallager now held in the library at Campobello.

In 1822 a Richard Matthews Sr. is trading on Popes Folly Island. Loyalist records do not give information on Francis but do refer to a Richard as above.

On July 4, 1804 it was reported by NBRG # 590 that the estate of Francis Mathis was being settled with the administrator being David Owen (Dec. 24)

2. RICHARD² MATTHEWS (FRANCIS¹) was born 1770, and died February 18, 1856 in Wilson's Beach, Campobello Island, N.B.. He married (1) HANNAH FOUNTAIN May 03, 1802 in Campobello, N. B., daughter of STEPHEN FOUNTAIN and SARAH. She was born Abt. 1782, and died Abt. 1822. He married (2) REBECCA MCVICKER December 20, 1822 in Eastport, Maine. She was born 1800.

Richard Mathis signed a lease on property on Campobello Island with David Owen on May 6, 1814. This lease refers to the same property also being leased to the brother of Richard, Francis. The rent for one year was $ 10 and half of the hay cut in the field, also the right to pasture stock at the usual half share on the pasture. Book D, Page 404, # 451. Can be seen at the record office at St. Stephen -1998.

A Richard Mathis was a regular customer at the trading station at Indian Island around 1820.

A Richard Matthews m. Rebecca McVicken about Jan. 1822. The ceremony was preformed by John Burgin and reported in the Jan. 5 issue of the Eastport Sentinel. This appears to be the same marriage that I have entered for Richard Matthews and Rebecca Merriam on Dec. 2?, 1822. From Eastport City Records.

Contained in a listing of early McVicar notes is a reference to a Rebecca McVicar born 1800 married to a Richard Matthews. She is the daughter of Nevin And Lydia (Cousins) McVicar who settled at Mascarene, N. B. Rebecca was mentioned in an account book from Popes Folly Island in 1822 and may have been a teacher on nearby Indian Island. We wonder if she had been married to Daniel Merriam earlier.

On the 1851 census for campobello there are three families living very closely together in the general area where the local familiy had been for some years. The family of Stephen age 44 is easy as his father Richard is living with him etc. John age 47 and his family is not so easy to place nor is the family of Thomas and his brother John and what appears to be the family of their late brother Abram.

For the time being and to get them on this file I am going to declare them all to be the children of Richard.

We now think that we know the family of Charles and reports suggest that Francis may have died before having much family this leaves us with Richard.

Notes for HANNAH FOUNTAIN:

There are different dates given for her death.

Since we had thought she died close to 1850 we gave the last two children to her. The second marriage sugests that they belonged to Rebecca.

The age of Richard does not agree with some other source. ( 1851 census ?)

A recent examination of my notes from the Eastport City Records gives the family of Charles & Joanna Matthews as shown. We believe that this is likely the same as above Charles.

There is no special reason to attach this fellw here except to get him on the list. One reson to think that he could belong here is that Richard also named a son Thomas.

Thomas and James were living with their mother (on Grand Manan Island, N. B.) who had married the Wilcox by 1851.

Not a lot is known about Stephen Matthews.

The birth date of Stephen is 1807 from 1851 census; 1805 from 1861 census. The Eastport Sentinel Reported his death as Dec. 6, 1868 age 62.

Ship Register # 33 1837 MARY ANN a 54 ft. Pink Schooner had as a master in 1840 a Stephen Mathews.

Our Stephen would have been 33 years old in 1840 and many in the family used only one t in the family name. Mathis was also used.

Stephen appears with wife Frances on 1851 census. She must have died between then and 1866.

Stephen Mathews m. Susan Wentworth Porter July 8, 1860. She had been m. to Allan Porter who had died . 1861 census shows Susan as the wife of Stephen Mathews.

This lady was born in L'tete, N. B. and is referred to in Passamaquoddy as the daughter of Thomas Wentworth and Martha Mathews. She is said to have married three times. 1. Oct. 1, 1849 to Allen Porter of Campobello 2. July 8, 1860 to Stephen Mathews (probably of Campobello and the same as had been m. to Frances in 1851) 3. Nov. 17, 1869 to Charles Clarke.

Her exact age is a bit of a problem as Barto has b. 1831, 1901 census has her b. July 14, 1829 etc.
