Descendants
of Michael Smith
Captain Jacob Smith left his birthplace of Stony
Brook, Long Island, New York, along with other Loyalists. He died September 29, 1837 and is buried at the Old
Anglican Cemetery in Woodstock, New Brunswick.
His great grandfather was Michael Smith who was born about 1640 in England and died about 1684 in the English Neighborhood, Bergen County, New Jersey.
Bertha Josephene Smith
was a great granddaughter of the captain. She seems to have been born
August 5, 1866, although her tombstone shows 1869. She was twice
married, both times to Loyalist descendants, both times to
Kiersteads. She was my paternal grandmother, and I have
only a vague memory of her waving from a distant window. The
window was high up in a building of the Northern Maine
Sanitorium, a tuberculosis care center. She died January 19, 1945, when I was nine years old.
