The various spellings of a name should be examined, as items about the same family or individual may be found under different spellings. This is a CRITICAL statement in genealogical research! (See Occupation- Census Taker Below)
As a census transcriber, I DO NOT correct names that
appear to be mispelled in the census. The Census is a
classic example of "misspelled" first names!
Ocupsyshun - Census Taker
"I am a census takers for the city of Bufflow. Our
City has groan very fast in resent years & now in 1865, it
has become a hard & time consuming job to count all the
peephill. There are not many that con do this werk, as it
is nesessarie to have an ejucashun, wich a lot of pursons still
do not have. Anuther atruhbyoot needed for this job is god
spelling, for meny of the pephill to be counted can hardle speek
inglish, let alon spel there names!" This might
explain why some surnames are "spelt wrong" in the
census.

In most cases, the following list indicates the official
enumeration dates for the various census returns. The actual
enumeration of the population took weeks or months. Enumerators
were instructed to record the information on the census returns
as it existed on the official enumeration date.

The 1851 date was actually a deadline for returning the forms rather than an effective enumeration date. The 1861 date was an effective enumeration date but may not have been strictly followed since the actual enumerations were mainly done in the autumn. See Craig Walsh's Census Acts for more details.
