Carleton Sentinal, 6 May 1876:

Fire in Victoria County: The house and barn of John H. Day, Drumond, were totally destroyed by fire one day last week. Besides his buildings, Mr. Day lost all his furniture and a large lot of seed. There was no insurance: the total cost will be more then $1000.00.

The Jim Day house is located at left, going to Drummond, just above the hill at Hennigars corner. This house is now owned by a Ouellette, and I remember it was damaged by fire some years ago, then repaired. The original Day house stood just across the road from this one and that too was destroyed by fire.  Other day houses included two still standing. One located just above 155 Chapel St. This in my time, was known as Leo Cormiers house. On the same street is another Day house, now owned by Mrs. Nadeau at 258 Chapel St. The Leo Cormier house was owned bt Jim and Margaret Day.

I also believe a Day owned the land where St. Michaels R. C. church is now located. The information on the Day residents was provided by the Curator of the Grand Falls, Museum. More About Mary Ann Price: Burial: May 1867, Pinehill Cemetery, Grand Falls, NB.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY of DANIEL FRANCIS DAY

Great Grandfather
My Great Grandfather John Day was born in England. He came to Massachusetts in time to attend the Boston Tea - Party, and was an officer under George Washington in the Revolutionary war: For meritorious services, he received a tract of land called Patricktown Plantation, now changed to Sangsville, Lincoln County, Maine.

Grandfather
My Grandfather, also named John Day was Born and lived on Patricktown Plantation. He married Louisa Leighton. Together they lived on the Plantation. They had one son named John who died - Later another son was born, and to perpetuate the name of John, as the grant or donation of the land of the Plantation was in the name of John Day. The second son who became my father, was called John. My Grandfather died when my father was (5) days old. As time went on, my Grandmother was remarried to a man by the name of Henry Whiticher, one of King George's loyal subjects, who was a Tory, as all of the Kings subjects were called at that time by the Yankees. He soon became aware that he and my Grandmother could not enjoy the plantation which was given  by the United States to my Great Grandfather in consideration of which I have already stated. So they packed up and took my father and went into New Brunswick, and there
secured land in the forest where they hoped my father would grow up and not know anything in Particular of the  Maine property. They left on the the Plantation a man they called Uncle Cunningham, who was on the place when my father last knew about it. What relation this Uncle Cunningham was, or on what side of the family, I never knew.  Children in the second family were:Merrill and Henry Whitcher, and Louisa Whitcher, (afterwards married to a McCurdy), and Elizabeth Whitcher, (who married a Simpson).

Father
My father, John day, was born April 30, 1805, on the Patricktown Plantation, Maine. He married Ann McCloskey. Who was born in the North of Ireland, July 1815. She came to St. Andrews, Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, with her Parishents at the age of 8 Years. Her mother's name was Isabel McKinney, and was born in Scotland. There were nine children in my father's Family, all born in the same house and raised in the said wild woods of New Brunswick. Their names order of names were: Louisa; George Washington; John Henry; Ann Isabel; Elizabeth; Daniel Francis; James Libbeus; David Forister; Ephrain Manessa. My Father was always called Yankee Daddy - Day, by his British Neighbours. Probably because he would not take out naturalization papers. However, by reason of his being land owner, he always had a vote and voice in all public affairs. In later years, after my brothers and I had moved to Maine, my father went to Calais, Maine and lived there for sometime. He found he still retained his American citizenship and voted for Abraham Lincoln in 1864. My father died at the age of 83 years and 5 months, in Stillwater, Minnesota. My mother died in 1878 in Pennsylvania. Where she was living with my brothers.

DANIEL FRANCIS DAY
I was born on February 4, 1842, on Soral Ridge, in the Parish of St. Patrick, (afterwards called Dumbarton) County of Charlotte, Province of New Brunswick, before it was known as the Dominion of Canada, for there were the Provinces of Upper Canada, Lower Canada, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and other Parts and Parcels of what is now known as the Dominion of Canada. Here I spent my childhood days, went to school 3 terms or school years. I helped on my father's farm until the age of 15 years. Then I worked three seasons in the sawmill. At the age of 18 years I went to Maine, where I worked in the lumber woods, river driving, and in the sawmills, until the Fall of 1864. I claimed citizenship on account of reaching my majority in the United States, and my Father having been born in Maine, never having taken out papers in New Brunswick. I voted for Lincoln in 1864 and was enrolled for the last draft in the Civil war, but was not called. In November 1864, I went to Pennsylvania, where I worked in the logging camps during the winter of 1864 - 1865. In May 1865, I went to Minnesota, where I continued in the logging camps and river driving. In 1871, I married Miss Mary A. Hopkins of Old Town, Maine. We moved to Stillwater, Minnesota, where there were four children born to us: - Sarah Louise - born May 20, 1872 and died October 1873 of typhoid fever. Ernest Edgar - born May 21, 1874, Mary Edna, born September 4, 1878, Cora Isabel, July 8, 1882. In 1886, my wife died while visiting the lumber camp where I was employed. I remained in Stillwater, Minnesota until 1889, when I moved with my family to Tacoma, Washington, arriving June 3, in 1895. I was remarried to Mrs. Adelina Mooers Bradley, a widow, who had been my faithful housekeeper and mother to my children since 1887.

Mary A. Hopkins, was born in New Brunswick, March 5, 1847, Her Parents were David Hopkins, born in Maine, Sarah Murray Hopkins, born in Scotland, at the of Mary, her Parishents were living temporarily in New Brunswick, where her father was engaged in the lumber busness. Afterwards they returned to Old Town, Maine. She was married married to Daniel Frances Day in 1871, and died of Winter cholera, March 7, 1886. sgd. D. F. Day

A.  His Grandmother's second husband surname has been spelt to different ways.
B.  Also he states that St. Patrick Parish was later called Dumbarton Parish.  This is just the opposite, for the 1851 Census of Charlotte  County, shows it as Dumbarton Parish, and the 1861 Census, shows it  as St. Patrick Parish  (RootsWeb Charlotte County Coordinator  states that St. Patrick was an original Parish in Charlotte County when New Brunswick became a province in 1785.  After the 1851 census, due to the population, Dumbarton Parish was created from St. Patrick Parish.  Today, year 2000, Sorrel Ridge is in the Parish of Dumbarton.
C.  As to when Ann McCloskey, arrived in St. Andrew's, he states that she  was of the age of 8 years, and was born in 1815. The 1851  census has her listed as arriving in 1820, and also shows her at the age of 38 years. The  1861 Census shows her at the age of 50 years. His father in the 1851 Census  is shown as a native of New Brunswick, age 50, and the 1861 Census shows  him born in the United States, age 56.
D.  He spelt his place of birth as Soral Ridge. Today it is spelt as Sorrel Ridge, the same way it was spelt in 1851 Census. It was a Settlement, 4  miles East of Dumbarton: Dumbarton Parish, Charlotte County: PO 1894-  1914; in1898 Sorrel Ridge was a farming settlement with 1 post office and a  population of about 50: today Sorrel Ridge is a dispersed community.
