Armstrong
Settlement, Long Settlement, Elm Valley, and Mount Pleasant
Armstrong Settlement was a small
community on the border between the present Waterford and Hammond
Parishes along the Long Settlement Road north of the Shepody Road.. It
was often considered part of Long Settlement, of Elm Valley at times,
or even called Mount Pleasant, but it had its own post office from 1882
to 1916, John Armstrong being the postmaster for many of those years.
In 1916 the post office was removed to Elm Valley. But in 1898
Armstrong was a community with a post office and a population of 30. In
the 1919 McAlpine's Directory, it is listed as a post community with a
population of still 30. Shortly after that this community became a
dispersed community as people moved out of the Shepody Road area to
Sussex, Saint John and beyond.
Armstrong Settlement is considered part of Mount Pleasant in the
Hutchinson's Directories of 1865-1868. Robert F Fellows erroneously
notes that this former settlement was at Pleasant Lake, at least 6
miles further northeast. However a careful comparison of the names
listed as living there in the Hutchinson's Directories will prove that
these individuals lived in Armstrong Settlement and along the road from
Walton Lake to Lisson Settlement from its intersection with the Long
Settlement Road. See the coloured section on the map below for a visual
representation of this community. That outlined in red is
that section which seems to be exclusively Elm Valley although all of
the red and green sections are at times referred to as Elm Valley. That
section outlined in green is what
is often considered Long Settlement. That which is outlined in blue is
uniquely Armstrong Settlement. The combination of the three outlined
areas is what is referred to in 1865-1868 as Mount Pleasant.
