Walker Settlement School

The Walker Settlement School sits on the corner of the Walker Settlement Road and the road up over the hill to Long Settlement. It is not known with certainly just exactly when the school was built, but it was in existence by 1877, the first year for which I was able to find a school record in the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick in Fredericton. A perusal of the school records is quite interesting, especially for the names of the students which attended this little school house in a beautiful part of Kings County, New Brunswick. I have listed below the names of the teachers (when available) and the names and ages of the students (when legible enough to read) who attended the Walker Settlement School over a four year period from the Fall of 1877 to the Spring of 1881.

As with many old records, there are two main problems with interpreting what is written: 1) Being able to read the free hand writing in the first place; certain letters were written differently in the 1800's than they are today; spelling was often phonetic rather than standardized, like today. 2) Being able to read the often faded, blotted or stained writing on the paper. - Therefore, you are asked to keep in mind that I have tried to faithfully decipher the following information. However, due to the difficulty of even reading some of the microfilm, some of the names and ages may not be right. Some of the teachers, as well, give different ages to the same students. Some teachers also give slightly different names to some students, sometimes using initials others do not use. - So please check the information contained below with the original sources if possible. Any researcher can make mistakes and must, at times, make educated guesses.
