4 ROBBINSTON and CALAIS, Maine- Arthur Ernest Garland, 81, beloved husband of Edith (Olson) Garland, died peacefully Sunday, May 22, 2005, at his home in Robbinston. Arthur "Art" was born Sept. 17, 1923, at his grandparents' home in Oak Hill, N.B., Canada, to Ernest and Hilda (Rogers) Garland. Art was educated at Calais Academy, Calais and Ricker College in Houlton. With the exception of two years employment with Sears & Morbarck, Art was employed with Eastern Pulpwood (Domtar) from 1941 until his retirement in 1987. He joined the Navy at the outbreak of World War II and became one of the very first to be what is now known as a Navy Seal. He remained in this aspect for the first year. He went on to fly submarine patrol in the Caribbean on Southern Atlantic and also taught gunnery instruction and bomb disposal. Art was a lifelong member of the American Legion VFW. In addition to these accomplishments, he was a licensed professional forester and scalar, a member of the National Trappers Association and the Maine Lobster Association. Art enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing and trapping, between his two camps, Enoch Brook and Beaver Lake. In the summers, he spent his time lobster fishing and gardening at Robbinston. In Art's younger years he spent several years as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts in Calais. Art met his wife, Edith in Washington, D.C. during the war. He was especially proud of marrying his "bride" (as he lovingly referred to her) in 1946 at the wedding chapel at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The couple made their home on South Street in Calais, until retiring to Robbinston in 1987. Art would lend a listening ear to his grandchildren and enjoyed passing his love of nature to anyone who was around. Many people will fondly remember Art always being accompanied by a dog, his last one named, Enoch, and his pipe. Art is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Edith; his son, Peter Erik and his wife, Joyce; daughter, Rebecca Olson and her husband, Bob; grandchildren, Dana, Erika, Tamara, Kari Anne, Tiffany, Peter, Jeremiah, Kristina and Shannon; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Anthony, Marquis and Elijah. He is also survived by an aunt, Eleanor Haley; and a cousin, Nelson Haley of Oak Hill, N.B., Canada. He will be sadly missed. At the request of the deceased, there will be no visiting hours. A service for family and friends will be announced at a later date. Donations in Art's memory may be made to Community Health and Counseling, P.O. Box 425, Bangor, ME 04402-0425. The family is very appreciative of the personal care extended to Art by Dr. McHugh, Sally Madsen and Heidi Williams, during the last few months of his illness.Bangor, Maine Daily News: 26 May 2005
