 1.         Joseph1 Donald  (WilliamA, JonathonB, JonathonC, WilliamD, WilliamE) was born October 22, 1806 in Sunderland
Barracks, England (Cockermouth), and died February 25, 1900 in Dufferin P., Charlotte County, New Brunswick.

Notes for Joseph Donald: Letter from Joseph Donald to his son Joseph Donald Jr.

Red Pine Grove, Dufferin, April 6rth 1885 AD
"Written for and at the request of my Son Joseph Donald Jr.
I was born in Sunderland Barracks, England on 22nd day of October AD 1806 in the stirring times of the French War, my father being and officer in the Cumberland Militia, but always have claimed Workington as my native place, for out of a family of nine children I was the only one born out of that dear old town.

On my Father's side, as one of the oldest of Scotch names indicate we are of Scotch decent and far back my ancestors were Warriors and Statesmen and a title belonged to the family with the motto Eternal Justice, but when or how it extinct, I don not know or care, but my Great Grandfather was the owner of large landed property both in England and Scotland. He, I believe, and have heard was born in the Carse of Gowrie, Scotland. He owned a large Estate in the North of England, at a place called Bough a short distance from the city of Carlise in the county of Cumberland. It was a large Freehold Estate and had justice been done it would have belonged to my Grandfather, Johnathon Donald, and at his death to my Father William Donald, but my Grandfather according to the aristocratic notions of his Father, (my Great Grandfather) brought disgrace upon the family by marrying a girl, which they considered far below their rank in society. It happened in this wise.  My Grandfather was sent out to look after some business connected with the Borough estate in England and on his way he stopped at the Village of  Gretna Green and took up his abode with the far famed blacksmith of that famed place. His name was Walter Coulthard know all over the North of Europe, for it was he that married all the runaway fools of that period Lords, and beggars and all the way in between. During my Grandfather's stay in Gretna Green he fell in love with the Blacksmith's fair daughter and married her and she of course was my Grandmother.  For this great offense art least in my Great Grandfather's eyes, my Grandfather was disinherited  and my Great Grandfather willed the Brough Estate to my Grandfather's sister Mary Donald, but old Walter was master of the occasion. He said "Never mind my boy you can live with me and learn the Blacksmith Trade". He did so and became a useful member of society instead of a useless drone. Through some trouble between my Father and his Aunt she in turn willed the Brough Estate to my Father's Cousin David thus my Father and his children became deprived of a large property and which would have enriched the whole family.

My Mother's name before marriage was Bell. She belonged to a highly respectable family, in a place called Ireby (Caldbeck), County of Cumberland, England, which was noted for their great beauty for generations back, both men and women. My Grandfather's name on my Mother's side belonged to the highly respectable family of movers

My Father always took a great part in the political issues of his time and was a staunch supporter of blue or Whig parties.

I left England at the age of 18 years and landed at the Ledge in the County of Charlotte, a stranger in a strange land to do battle with the world to occupy a place therein. You my dear Son know how well I succeeded for I have filled the highest place for four years in the gift of the people a Member of the House of Assembly and now occupy the position of Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Charlotte and also Commissioner or Judge of the Parish of Dufferin Civil Court. So now my dear Son you know all the rest and I send you and Lizzy and the Dear Children my best Blessing and may God prosper and bless you all is the sincere prayer of your ever loving old Father.

   Joseph Donald

P.S. We are all at present as well as common hoping you are all well.     J.P.

My Dear Boy I omitted to say that your Dear old Mother is the Granddaughter of Mathew Thornton , one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence of the United States.

   Joseph Donald.

The transcript of the obituary from the February 28, 1900  Calais Advertiser is as follows:

"There were few better known men in the St. Croix valley than Joseph Donald, whose long and useful career on this earth was closed at two o'clock Sunday afternoon at his home at Dufferin. He died as he had lived at peace with God and man, and in the hope of immortality beyond the grave.

Mr. Donald was born at Sunderland Barracks, October 22nd 1806 and spent his boyhood days in Workington, County of Cumberland, England. He came to this country in 1826, in the brig "Edgar," of Whitehaven, England. In his 22nd year he married Elizabeth Mary Thornton, daughter of Matthew and Sarah Thornton, who died some years ago. Mr.& Mrs. Donald brought up a large family of children, of whom there are surviving: Joseph Donald, Jr., British Columbia; Robert T. Donald, Dufferin; Mrs Isabella A. Brown, Boston; Mrs Charlotte Hendershot, Dufferin; and Mrs. Amanda A. Libby, Dufferin. Mr. Donald ably represented Charlotte county in the Provincial Legislature and served the Parish of Dufferin for many years as Commissioner of the Parish Court. But perhaps the most valuable service he rendered the people of St. Croix was the freely given knowledge of fruit and flower culture, of which he was the pioneer in the section, and in which science he was highly skilled. Few are the middle-aged residents of either side of the river who have not visited the orchards and greenhouses of Mr Donald."

He was the oldest son of William Donald, and Officer in the Cumberland Militia and Miss Bell, daughter of Robinson Bell of Ierby County of Cumberland.  William Donald, my Grandfather was born in the Carse of Gowrie, Scotland and owned large Estates, in both Scotland and England, One place was called Brough a short distance from Carlisle in the North of England.  The property should have gone to his son Jonathon Donald and at his death to William Donald but owing to Jonathon marrying the daughter of Walter Coulthard (the famous Blacksmith of Gretna Green) whom he met on a business trip connected with their Brough Estate, he was disinherited as the marriage was beneath according aristocratic notion of his father and the estate was willed to Mary Donald, Jonathon's sister. She in turn had some trouble with William Donald ( to whom it rightfully belonged) and willed it to his cousin David Donald.

Here the property passed out of our immediate family. The motto of our family is Eternal Justice ,

Obituary - Saint Croix Courier - July 1, 1915

Robert T. Donald

The parish of Dufferin and the community at larges has suffered a loss in the death of Robert T. Donald, who died at his home on Thursday, June 24th 1915, at the age of sixty nine years, after an illness extending over several weeks . Mr Donald came to the Ledge in infancy and since reaching years of maturity has always been among the foremost in every activity for the moral or material welfare of the place. He was originator of the movement which brought to the front the natural advantages of the St. Croix Harbour, and his friends hoped that he might live to see a realization of his visions in this connection. The organization of the Dufferin board of trade was due to his initiative, and he continued as president of the board until quite recently. At the time of his death he held the offices of parish clerk and revisor. He might be called a pioneer in the fruit industry in this section and  from his life-long experiences in such work he was always ready to to help those seeking assistance. He loved nature and all the beautiful things of field and forest. Tender hearted and gentle, upright and true, this world is a loser by the passing away of such a life.  His body was laid to rest in the St. Stephen Rural Cemetery on Sunday last, and many friends from town and country assembled to pay a last tribute of regard to his memory. His widow , four sons and two daughters survive him.

" The Work of the Reaper"

From the World, published at Vancouver, B.C. on May 25th we clip the following:
The sad death occurred on Saturday evening of Mary Elizabeth Donald wife of Mr . Joseph Donald, formerly proprietor of a grocery store on Westminster Avenue. Mr. Donald left two weeks ago for Mexico. It is uncertain where he is now, and all attempts to locate him by telegraph have so far proved unavailing. The cause of death was heart failure. The deceased was forty nine years of age and a native of St. Stephen, N.B.  Mrs. Donald resided in Boston Mass., and then at El Cajou, Cal.. before coming to Vancouver nearly seven years ago. She was greatly beloved and respected. She leaves two sons and four daughters.

Mrs. Donald, whose maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Hannah, was born at Pomeroy Ridge, February 8th 1856. On October 4th 1871, she married Joseph Donald Jr., of Ledge, Dufferin. Eight children came to them, six of whom, four daughters and two sons, with her husband survive her.

About twenty years ago, Mr. and Mrs, Donald moved to El Cajou, California, where they resided until moving to Vancouver, B.C., in 1898.

In the past five or six years Mrs Donald suffered greatly with her heart and the death of her youngest daughter, Fay, more than two years ago,  proved a great shock from which she never recovered. Of late months she had seemed much better and was talking about making a trip home to New Brunswick to visit her mother who still resides at  the Ridge.

The night of her death she had been shopping with her daughter and on her return home was her usual bright, happy self, chatting with her children, and even walking to the gate with her married daughters and their children, who had been to see her. About eleven o'clock she retired , and had apparently just fallen asleep when her daughters heard her moan, went to her bedside and found the Master had said 'Come home.' With a smile on her lips she obeyed the call breathing her last about eleven twenty without waking from sleep. Peaceful and sweet, indeed was the the end.

An ideal wife and mother. placing her home first of all, a true and faithful friend, ever a helping hand and helpful word for those who crossed her pathway, her place is one that cannot be filled. -Com.
