| Our Dad Harold Smith Tatton left this life at 9:10 PM on June 8th, 2006 accompanied by our soft singing and loving caresses. His longing to be with Jesus is now reality. Mom Eunice and Dad were married on June 6th, 1936. 70 years together. Imagine it! We are so proud of them! Mom who says Dad was so romantic and a great kisser will miss him deeply. Daddy was born to Harvey and Eleanor (nee Smith) on April 24th, 1916. His three brothers, Bernard, Ozburn and Alison and one sister, Mary are gone. Sister Olive Russell (Bill) and Brother Gene (Joyce) live in Quispamsis and St. Andrews respectively. Dad grew up, married and worked when in the days there was very little work and less money. He and Uncle Wayne dug clams (eight buckets to the barrel @ .90 cents a barrel) to survive. He sailed on the "Steamer" for $30.00 a week. Painting, carpentry, fish peddling, dulsing, a Fuller Brush Representative, and fishing were all parts of his efforts to provide for his family. He became known for his ability to run concrete. Many a young man learned to love or hate hard work manning a shovel or a wheel barrow helping Dad to run concrete in every nook and cranny of Grand Manan. We his children, Janice Guptill (Claude) of St. Andrews, Helen Daggett (Claude) of Seal Cove, Marilyn Marsters (Ron) of St. Stephen, and Doug Tatton (Rose Mary) of Sussex have given Dad 14 grandchildren. They in turn blessed him with 25 great grandchildren. He was very pleased to see his one great great grandchild just a few days ago. Most of his offspring's have enjoyed the warm privilege of curling up on the cot in the kitchen with Daddy where he took a nap after supper. If every child could be so blessed. Dad's legacy is his strong faith that he passed along to his family. His faithfulness to his church is a model for all of us. He served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 40 years. Who could forget his opening of each Sunday Session with "Heavenly Sunshine". Few with so little have given so much because they believed so strongly. A happy celebration of a good life lived by this Godly man will be celebrated at his funeral service on Sunday, June 11th, 2006 at 1:00 PM at Central Wesleyan Church, Grand Harbour. Interment to follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Castalia. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 10th, at Central Wesleyan Church 2 to 4 PM, 7 to 9 PM. Instead of flowers please honor Dad by donating to the Gideon Bibles, Central Wesleyan Church Building Memorial Account, or to Bethany Bible College, Sussex. [The Telegraph-Journal] | |||

| Joan P. Barberis was born in Nelson, British Columbia on 12 June 1924, the second of Frederick and Hilda Barberis's two daughters. The family made a succession of moves eastward across Canada and were living in Montreal when Joan graduated high school. She joined the WRENs and served at several Naval post in eastern Canada during the course of World War II. After the war, she worked for a time for relief agencies in Britain helping resettle refugees, including displaced Jewish children. Joan returned to Canada, working in journalism until 1960, when she traveled through Asia, staying in hostels in rural Japan, working for a newspaper in Hong Kong, trekking through southeast Asia, writing accounts of her adventures for a Montreal newspaper - and taking the Trans-Siberian Railroad east to west across the USSR at the time the Soviets had shot down an American spy plane and were very suspicious of Westerners. Back in Canada, Joan worked for CBC Radio in Toronto and Montreal, primarily as a producer. She also found time to be active in the Women's Movement and cared for her elderly parents in their last days. In the early 1980s, she made another daring move, leaving the security of big-city jobs to buy an old farmhouse on Grand Manan and support herself with a variety of on-island jobs, including writing columns for the St. John Telegraph Journal. Joan was an active member of the Grand Manan community, beloved for her wit and enthusiasm and appreciated for her kindness and generosity. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Betty Barberis Kemp, and a nephew, John Moore. She leaves a brother-in-law, Ted Kemp, a niece, Elizabeth Kemp Moore, and Liz's husband, Michael Moore, daughter Rachel Moore, and son James Moore, all of the U.K., as well as numerous friends on Grand Manan, across Canada, and, indeed, throughout the world. A celebration of Joan's life and the spreading of her ashes will be held on Grand Manan in July 2007; the date will be announced later. | Digby, Nova Scotia Courier 20 Feb 1903 The Late Edw. Lank We have been requested to publish the following from a Grand Manan correspondent: "The remains of the late Edw. Lank was brought to Wilson's Beach on Tuesday 28th, at 11:30 and taken to his mother's home where many friends wee fathered. On Thursday the funeral was held at the Welshpool Church. There was the largest congregation evern seen in the church, the Rev. A.J. Proser, Baptist clergyman at the Beach, came with Mr. Lank's family. They were met at the church by the Rev. W. H. Street, who read the solemn and impressive burial service. Hymns 400, "Christ Will Gather in His Own", and 264, "They Will Be Done," were sung. There was not a dry eye in the congregation. The clergyman spoke well and tried to comfort the friends. The body of the deceased was laid beside his wife and child. Great praise is given Capt. Snow and the undertaker at Yarmouth, for the way the body was put up. After the long journey, he looked as if he had just fallen asleep. The casket was the best ever seen in the church. We do not forget the other young man. His famjily have our deepest sympathy. It was God's doings. Doubtless when their sufferings were over here, they crossed to a brighter shore. God who holdesth the waters in the hollow of His hand, was able to save them. Capt. Snow feels the accident, but he is always careful and kind to his men. We hear that the deceased was soon to be married, and we feel sorry for the young lady, but it was God's will. | |||
