ST. JOHN’S PRESBYTERIAN CEMETERY
BUCTOUCHE, KENT COUNTY, NB

Transcribed from tombstone monuments by
Wendy Fisher Donnahee and John W. Donnahee
&
Mae Hannah Fisher and Sherman Fisher
October 2003

St. John’s Presbyterian cemetery is located on Irving Boulevard across the street from the Sawmill Point Boat Basin and next to the Irving Arboretum.  The first burial took place during the month of May in 1847 for Sarah Mapson, infant daughter of Edward and Mary Mapson.  The first worship service at St. John’s Presbyterian Church was held in 1874.  The church was in continuous use for 92 years until it was demolished in 1966.  Today a beautiful memorial garden pays homage to this sacred ground where once stood the St. John’s Presbyterian Church and the cemetery where more than 300 individuals have been laid to rest. The Irving family built the memorial garden and Irving Memorial Chapel in 2002 - 2003.  Three noteworthy individuals interred at this cemetery include John Bowser Sr. 1798 – 1877, Chief Magistrate of Buctouche; Rev. John David Murray 1834 – 1906, minister of St. John’s Presbyterian Church; and J. D. Irving 1860 – 1933, founder of J. D. Irving Limited and father of industrialist K. C. Irving.

It is believed that within this cemetery there are re-interments of remains from the MacIntosh Hill Burial Ground.  As well, MacIntosh Hill Burial Ground remains may also have been re-interred in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Zion United Church at McKee’s Mills, Kent County NB.  These re-interments were as a result of road construction in the MacIntosh Hill area during the 1970’s.  Like many older cemetery, there appear to be several areas with unmarked burials.

Each tombstone monument has been transcribed.  In addition, this transcript was compared to the Memorial Garden Plaques, which list the individuals buried in the cemetery. These plaques are located on stonewalls in the memorial garden with an entry way to the cemetery. For the purpose of this genealogical research, the transcription of the actual tombstone monuments has been set as the standard.  There are numerous discrepancies between the tombstone monuments and the plaques.  Notes containing additional information as well as the discrepancies are contained in bracketed (  ) italicized text.  The noting of discrepancies and additional information has been included in order to aid the researcher.  The information used for the Memorial Garden Plaques was taken from several written sources and other methods of identification.  With an identification project this large as well as working from age worn monuments, it is understandable that discrepancies will occur.  Also, it is not uncommon to find discrepancies of inscriptions on a tombstone monument.  Additional primary documentation from sources such as Provincial Archives of New Brunswick (PANB) records should be consulted in order to determine the correct information where discrepancies have been noted.  The transcript of the Memorial Garden Plaques follows immediately after the tombstone transcript.

The historical background information and the bracketed (  ) italicized text is additional information provided by researcher Wendy Fisher Donnahee.

WARD

WARD, Isabella Lo… died (?) age 2 years, 8 months & 12 days
WARD, Infant son died Oct 20, 1862 aged 9 days                                                                     Thomas & Jane Ward                                                                                                                                  (This small monument is located under a fir tree in the northwest corner of the cemetery.  It is next to the monument of Thomas & Jane Ward.  It has been broken and repaired.  Some parts of the inscription are illegible.  The names do not appear to be listed on the Memorial Garden Plaque, with the possible exception of Infant Ward 1867-1867 – this may be referring to the Infant son who died Oct 20, 1862 – there is no way to confirm this assumption.)

her husband:
WARD, Stirling J. 1908 - 1986                                                                                                       (Listed as Sterling J. Ward on the Memorial Garden Plaque.)
WARD, Isabella  Keswick                                                                                                                                (The inscription on this large monument is illegible.  It appears to be a family burial monument.  The name Isabella Ward 1838 (birth date – no death date) is listed on the Memorial Garden Plaque.  The name Isabella Ward does appear on another burial monuments in the cemetery – See WARD, Isabella Lo... (death date unreadable, age 2 years, 8 months & 12 days) - this is obviously not the same individual, but there may be a family connection.  Perhaps Isabella Ward born 1838 is the Isabella Keswick Ward listed on this monument?  She could be the unknown Ward inscribed on this tombstone monument who died in either 1856 or 1862 or July 1888.  Based on this assumption, it would make the Isabella Ward listed on the Memorial Garden Plaque either 18 years old or 24 years old or 50 years old at death.  This is pure speculation, which cannot be confirmed with complete accuracy. The following is all that can be read on the monument.)

THE MEMORIAL GARDENS OF
ST. JOHN’S PRESBYTERIAN CEMETERY
BUCTOUCHE, KENT COUNTY, NB

Transcribed by Wendy Fisher Donnahee and Sherman R. Fisher
October 2003

The Irving family has created the beautiful Memorial Gardens of St. John’s Presbyterian Cemetery.  The memorial gardens are at the entrance to the cemetery.  Stonewalls surround the garden, cemetery and front along Irving Boulevard.  These stonewalls were built in 2002 – 2003 by the following individuals:

Karl J. Roebuck    Amlwch, Wales, UK
Carl A. Watson    Chadderton, England, UK
Adam C. Brown    Shetland Isle, Scotland, UK
John Draper     Amlwch, Wales, UK
Christopher N. Moors   Amlwch, Wales, UK

A debt of gratitude is owed to the Irving family for their tremendous efforts in preserving this cemetery.  The restoration of the cemetery along with the memorial gardens will ensure that the names of the individuals interred at St. John’s Presbyterian Cemetery are preserved for their descendants and genealogist.

Within the gardens are four granite plaques listing the names of individuals who are interred in the cemetery.  As stated in the transcript of the tombstone monuments, the information inscribed on the tombstones is set as the standard.  Discrepancies between the tombstone monuments and the plaques along with additional information have been noted in bracketed (  ) italicized text. The introductory information and the bracketed (  ) italicized text is additional information provided by researcher Wendy Fisher Donnahee.

ST. JOHN’S PRESBYTERIAN CEMETERY
BUCTOUCHE
In the year of our Lord 1871, a small congregation of Presbyterians gathered together to make a decision to build a Presbyterian church in Buctouche.  From this meeting the St. John’s Presbyterian Church became a reality on this site in 1874.   The congregation met on a regular basis for 92 years.  The Lord bestowed many a blessing upon them.  The church was demolished in 1966.  The original book of communion members and the vessels of scared elements have been placed in the archives of the Irving Memorial Chapel.

… Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works shall follow them.  Revelations 14: 13

The First burial took place in St. John’s Presbyterian Cemetery in 1847.  Listed on theses plaques are the names of all those that have been laid to rest here in this cemetery.  These memorial gardens have been carefully designed with tree and flower as a place for quiet thought and reflection for all those who visit.

… Blessed are the dead which die in the lord… Revelations 14: 13
