GRIMES ( GINNESS)Richibucto Review May 1908
Moncton May 25
The holiday did not pass without a tragedy which came in the form of
death to two persons through drinking of bay rum, wood alcohol or some
other alcoholic poison. This afternoon doctors were summoned to an
Indian camp....Investigation shows that the Indian whose name was Oliver
Grimes (GINESS) of Buctouche and Mary Noel , wife of James Noel met in
Moncton on Saturday and went on a spree together. About half past
six Saturday evening they arrived at the Noel camp the worse of drunk.
According to Noel's son they had a pint bottle labeled bay rum but it was
empty at the time they reached camp. Sunday morning both fell ill
but nothing serious was anticipated until this morning when their situation
grew critical and medical aid was summoned. Before the doctor arrived Grimes
died and the squaw only arrived an hour or two longer. That both
deaths were due to drinking bay rum or wood alcohol is evident and Coroner
Purdy to night empanelled a jury to inquire into the facts.
The husband of Mrs. Noel is away in Buctouche at the time of the tragedy.
Those in camp were grimes, Mrs. Noel, her son Thos. Muse ( Meuse)and Levi
Paul.
She was thirty nine, while Grimes was between sixty and seventy.

KENT CO. MOTHER, DAUGHTER ARE KILLED
Mrs. Margaret McFadden, Daughter Iona Are Victims
Buctouche(Nov. 28) Residents of the Buctouche-Richiobucto section of
Kent county were saddened this evening by news of the highway death in
the United States of Miss Iona McFadden and her mother Mrs. Margaret McFadden.
Mrs. McFadden is a resident of St. Pierre, a community two miles from Buctouche
and Miss. McFadden, now of Lynn, Mass., resided there for many years. The
tragedy occurred near Franklin, Me. when the McFadden car struck another
car head-on along an isolated section of the highway. Miss McFadden was
killed instantly while her mother was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Several other persons in the car were reported injured. Mrs. McFadden
and her daughter left Moncton at 5:30 this morning for Lynn, where the
elder woman had planned to spend the winter with her daughter. Mrs. McFadden
had been spending her summers at their St. Pierre home and winters in Lynn,
where several daughters reside, since the death of her husband several
years ago.
Mrs. McFadden was the former Miss. Margaret Ryan of Buctouche.
She is survived by four daughters, Mary, Edith,Rita, and Margaret, all
of Lynn, and two sons, Albert of Hearst, Ont. And James, Jones Street,
Moncton. Two brothers also survive, John and Patrick Ryan of Buctouche.

Died at Bouctouche, on the 19th of March, Michael McFadden, Esq., at
the age of
66.On the occasion of the death of Michael Mcfadden, Esq., I have prepared
the
following remarks on his family.
John McFadden, born in Ireland, arrived at Saint John in 1824 at the
age of 16.
A sister by the name of Ellen later married to Patrick McCullough,
of Saint
John, had preceded him to America by a couple of years and with no
knowledge of
where she was, he found her in Saint John. He became engaged with a
compatriot
by the name of Hart to work in the lumber camps of the upper Saint
John River.
His employer was most pleased by his excellent qualities but John was
not able
to earn a living by swinging an axe and as a consequence was not of
much use.
Hart counselled his young friend to become a peddler and acting as
his mentor
provided him with a generous advance. John took the money and in the
course of
his travels, he had the good fortune to visit Bouctouche. He decided
that here
was where he was going to live. In 1830 he purchased a fine property,
the land
of Wenceslaus Roy, on the south bank of the Madagouiac (Little Bouctouche)
River, where his son Patrick still lives in fine comfort. In 1832,
he married
Ann Kiswick who converted to the Catholic religion.
Anne Kiswick was the sister of John Kiswick who died in Bouctouche
in 1882 at
the age of 80 and of Mrs. John Potts who is still alive at the age
of 78. The
Kiswick family came from the north of Ireland and arrived in Bouctouche
around
1828. Mrs. John Mcfadden died in 1853 at the age of 45 and the widower
married
a second time to Marguerite Desprez who is still alive. John died on
the 6th
of May 1868 at the age of 60.
His brother Patrick was married first to Rose Mulhern and then for
a second time to
Marie Henri. His sisters, Sarah who married Michel Carroll, Mary who
married
William Elliot and Suzanne who is a deceased spinster, arrived in Bouctouche
in
1835.
William Elliot has left two sons: Thomas who married Alice McPhelan,
and Joseph
who married Marie Chamberland. Michel Carroll is still alive at a very
advanced
age while his wife Sarah, died in March 1879 at the age of 66. Patrick
McCullough
and his wife died several years ago in Saint John. They left a grandson
in
Bouctouche, Harry, aged 10, who resides with the parish priest, Rev.
Michaud and
takes classes at the convent of the Immaculate Conception with great
success and
another granddaughter, Kateline, aged 7 who lives with her mother and
also takes
classes at the convent. These children are the sole offspring of Patrick
McCullough who died in 1884 and Ruth Trenholm, this Patrick being the
son of the
elder Patrick McCullough.
John McFadden and Patrick McCullough Sr. were for a long time associated
in
commerce.
The children of John McFadden and Anne Kiswick are:
Michel, deceased bachelor;
Jane, married to John Plume of South Branch, Richiboutou;
John, deceased bachelor;
Ellen, elderly spinster living in Saint John;
Thomas, elderly bachelor;
James, died in Ireland;
Patrick, married to Sarah O'Sullivan and father of a large family;
Mary, married to John Gifford, Saint John;
Joseph, married to Ellen O'Flaherty.
The McFadden family came from Clones, Fermanagh County in the north
of Ireland,
the same village that has given this province the esteemed Bishop of
Saint John,
Monsiegneur John Sweeny. The elderly John McFadden took great pleasure
to relate
that he had assisted at the marriage of the father and mother of the
Monseigneur
of Saint John.
John McFadden had purchased for his brother Patrick the property of
the heirs of
Julien Collet comprising the second lot at the tip of the Point and
adjacent to
the grant of Jacques Cormier. When the elderly Patrick who had spent
all his
life in the neighborhood of the Church, decided in 1874 to spend his
final years
in Saint John, Miss Marguerite Maillet, no doubt inspired by divine
providence,
purchased from him the plot of land between Black River and the road
to the
Church, containing 20 arpents. When Rev. Michaud arrived in the parish
in 1876
and spoke about building a convent, Miss Maillet, in order to encourage
such a
fine enterprise, donated this fine property whose value today is uncountable.
The rest of the lot was purchased and added to this property for the
usage of
the convent. Miss Marguerite Maillet, born in St. Louis, is today the
esteemed
Sister Julienne, superior of the convent of Ste. Anne in Shediac.
Some comments on this extensive article:
Michael McFdden was reported to be 56 in the burial entry in the Bouctouche
parish register. The writer reports him to be 66.
The three Kiswick siblings, John, Anne and Margaret always reported
that they
were natives of Scotland when enumerated by census takers. The writer
asserts
they originated in northern Ireland.

a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ryan, natives of Ireland. With

neighborly qualities had all times held for him the repect and esteem
of all who knew him, Mr. Ryan will be greatly missed in the neighborhood
and news of his sudden death will bring widespread regret.
