HERITAGE OF KENT COUNTY
by Bill Morris
BRIEF OVERVIEW

Kent County was first inhabited by the Mi'kmaq people.  Artifacts have been found in the area of Tjipogttjg dating in age of over 10,000 years.

The first French European settlers are thought to have arrived in present day Richibucto with Champlain in 1604, thus giving it the distinction of possibly being the first Euorpean community in Canada.

A Jesuit mission was established near present day Richibucto in 1609.
The population remained small with few English settlers until after New Brunswick was formed in 1784. Acadian settlers who had been expelled from Nova Scotia in 1755 settled in present day Bouctouche in the late 1700's.
By the 1850's the population had grown to approximately 15,000 people.
