ABOUT KENT COUNTY When New Brunswick was established in 1784 it consisted of eight
(8) counties. These original counties were later divided into fifteen
(15) counties. The counties in turn are divided into civil parishes
similar to townships found in the US.Kent County was formed from Northumberland County (one of the original 8 counties) in 1826. It is wedge shaped with it's Eastern border being the Northumberland Strait,( and PEI ) it's Western and Northern sides border of Northumberland County and it's Southern side borders on Westmorland and Queens Counties.
The Eastern side is approximately sixty miles in length running from Point Escuminac in the north, to Shediac Bay in the south.PARISH FORMATION
The parishes of Wellington and Carleton were created in 1814
as part of Northumberland County...then when Kent County was formed in 1826:
Parishes of Huskisson, Harcourt and Dundas were established from Wellington Parish
Liverpool Parish was established from Carleton Parish
(it was renamed Richibucto in 1832).
Weldford Parish was established in 1835 from part of Richibucto Parish
Palmerston Parish was renamed St. Louis in 1855
from Carleton and Richibucto Parish.

WELDFORD, and WELLINGTONSt Mary's Parish was established in 1867 from part of Wellington Parish
Acadieville was formed in 1876 from Carleton Parish
St. Paul established in 1883 from parts of St Mary's and Harcourt

Researchers should remember that pre 1826 records for Kent County may be included with the Northumberland County records.
(Also: The name Shediac was commonly used to refer to the area in and around Grand Digue, (Shediac Bridge and Shediac River)
Be sure to check the Westmorland County records in Shediac Parish if you have trouble locating your ancestors.
