Madawaska County is located in the northwestern corner of New Brunswick, bordered to the north, by Restigouche County ; to the east, by Victoria County ; to the south, by Aroostook County, Maine ; & to the west, by Temiscouata County, Quebec .
Researchers should note Madawaska was the last county to be formed in New Brunswick, occurring only in 1873 from Victoria County. As such, official records prior to this date should be researched using other county names as follows.
Remember, throughout much of the Province's early history our border with Maine was constantly in dispute. Therefore, no Madawaska County research would be complete without referencing Aroostook County, Maine records, as well.
