An explanation on Madawaska churches from Albert's History of Madawaska, courtesy of George Findlen (findleng@tds.net):

Saint Léonard started out as Saint Léonard de Port Maurice: chapel in the 1840's or so with register starting in 1854 and becoming stand-alone (i.e., having its own priest) around 1867. Saint Léonard-Ville [Saint Antoine de Padue] got its own chapel around 1881, becoming stand-alone circa 1921. Sometime afterwards, the bishop exchanged the two church names, making the parent church "Saint Antoine de Padue" and making the daughter church, which had now become the much larger one, "Saint Léonard de Port Maurice".

In almost all of the remaining areas of Madawaska, each community is named after its church.
