The Memorial Cross (more often referred to as the Silver Cross) was awarded to mothers and widows (next of kin) of Canadian soldiers who died on active duty. This Cross was present to his mother Mabel Holmes.
The round medallion says "He died for freedom and honor" around the outside edges. His name "Austin Holway Holmes" is inscribed in the square in the middle of the right hand side of the medallion.
Sergt. A.H. Holmes (Service #: 184126), a member of "C" Coy. of the 31st Battalion (Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment)), is buried at Caix British Cemetery (Plot II, Section A, Grave 10) in Caix, France.
