Notes for Richard McCarty:

The murder of Richard McCarty about 1870.

Richard arrived for work that morning and shortly after a man came down. This chap picked up a axe handle and struck Richard on the head, killing him instantly. This man was then charged with murder and convicted. He was also put to death for the terrible deed he had done. (Blair Meating 6-1-99)

Amy later married the Sheriff Alex Paul and they had one off spring Samuel. Amy died shortly after Samuel's birth.

Murder
It is seldom our duty as a journalist to record such a brutal murder as was perpetrated last week, in the village of St. George. A man named Ryan, a millman, at that place, had a quarrel with a fellow workman named McCarty. On Friday morning they met each other, and some words passed between them, after which they separated. In the evening, however, Ryan came down again to the mill with an axe-handle in his hand, and told McCarty that he wanted to see him. When they had gone a short distance Ryan raised the axe-handle and struck McCarty over the head, knocking him down. McCarty then rose to his knees, but being struck again on the back part of the neck fell back dead; while the villainous wretch who killed him, not content with what he had done, continued battering his head. Ryan then fled and remained at large until arrested by Coroner's Warrant. He is now safe in gaol, and we hope will soon meet the fate he richly merits.

After Ethel McCarty's mother Amy Clinch Paul died she and her sister Estella were removed from the Paul family, Ethel went to live with her uncle Frederick C. Clinch in Clinch's Mills (Musquash) and there is no information as to what happened to Estella. When Ethel married William Chelsey Clinch the wedding announcement referred to her as Ethel Clinch. The presentation page of a autograph book belonging to Ethel shows the name McCarty erased and Clinch inserted. It appears that F.C. Clinch adopted Ethel shortly before she attended Acadia College in N.S.
