"The following data is intended as an index to be used in searching the Kirk McColl Records for ancestors who lived in Scotch, Pomeroy and Little Ridge during the early 19th century. I have extracted names based on my research of known families in these communities during that period. I have attempted to read the data correctly from the original; many of the original entries are faint, obliterated, or downright impossible to read. The spellings are as they appear in the register, e.g., Neil, Neal; Murdic, Murdock;Mathewson for Matheson; Burges for Burgess; some abbreviations, e.g., Benj. I have spelled out. Town abbreviations are SS for St. Stephen and SJ for St. James, wherever they are indicated. Information on mothers is scant, where the mothers first name is listed in my transcription, there are a few surnames in the microfilm. The dates are in month-day-year format.
The only clergy available in these early years in the remote areas of Charlotte County were visiting ministers such as the Methodist Duncan McColl, who walked throughout the county to preach, officiate at religious functions including baptisms. As a result many of our Presbyterian ancestors had their children baptized by the Methodist circuit ministers who visited the ridges until the early 1830s when the Presbyterian Church at Scotch Ridge opened. Subsequently many of the Loyalist families retained a Methodist affiliation, while most of the Scots families of the immigration of 1804 continued their Presbyterian faith. I have a full transcript of the Scotch Ridge Baptism Register which provides a continuing birth record for these families, should a lookup be needed.
