Oct 18, 1900: Drowned at the Roadside
Mrs. John Deacon of Beaconsfield was in town on Saturday and started near noon to drive home alone. A little after three oclockshe met James Rideout and enquired as to the condition of Canouse bridge. Mr. Rideout informed her that the bridge was all right but the stream was flowing over the road a few rods from the bridge. He was probably the last to see Mrs. Deacon alive for, a half hour later, Skiff McGaw and Thomas Fraser found her lifeless body at the roadside. She has reached the place where the road was overflowing and it is surmised that the horse was unwilling to go through it. When found the team was standing at right angles with the road. The forward wheels being on the road side. Mrs. Deacons foot had caught between the spring and stringer of the wagon and her head was submerged in the water, which filled the ditch.Apparently life had only been extinct a short time. The deceased leaves a husband and three sons, Jerry Deacon of Milltown, Benjamin Deacon, now in B.C. and Joseph Deacon who lived at home.
