From time to time, earthquakes shake Charlotte County, Eastern Maine and beyond but rarely cause any damage.

October 14, 1865: The shock of an earthquake was experienced here on Saturday afternoon last, between 4 and 5 o’clock.
Oct 27 1870 The earthquake: A shock of an earthquake was experienced on Thursday last between 11 and 12 in the forenoon. In the New England States the sensation was greater than here. As far as we can learn the shock was not so severe here as that which occurred on the morning of 22nd Oct last year.
Feb 27, 1873 Advices from St.George state that a shock of an earthquake was experienced there on Saturday morning about half-past seven o’clock. A slight shock was also felt by some persons in St.Stephen, St.David and Waweig.
Mar 5, 1874 There was a very perceptible shock of an earthquake here on Friday evening last at a quarter to eleven o’clock. It seemed to proceed from South-East to North-West. It awoke many persons from their sleep, and as Artemas Ward said about Niagara Falls, it was “quite a success.”
Sept 15, 1881 Quite a heavy shock of earthquake was felt at St.George on Wednesday morning. It lasted about a minute, shaking the houses quite violently. In St.Stephen, also on Wednesday, about 10:45 a.m., a severe shock occurred, and although doing no damage, it created quite an excitement among the scholars of the Marks Street schools.
April 3, 1884 The residents of Old Ridge were started by a shock of earthquake. One day last week, a similar disturbance is said to have been noticed by a few of our own citizens.
Feb 26 1891 A slight shock of earthquake was felt on Friday evening.
1904 The last earthquake that caused any notable damage in the St.Stephen area occurred in 1904. . . The earthquake that year measured about five on the Richter scale and caused some chimney damage.
March 23 1911 An earthquake of sufficient force to rattle dishes, and lasting several seconds, was felt here at about eight o’clock Monday morning. The quake was not generally noticed by those abroad, but some who were still in their homes felt it quite distinctly.
October 02, 1924 A quite lively shock of earthquake about 5 o’clock, Tuesday morning is reported by some people in town. Those who don’t go to bed to listen for earthquakes didn’t hear it or feel it but others did and experienced quite a sensation. Papers report the shock quite prevalent through New Brunswick, Quebec and several of the States but no damage appears to have resulted.
January 21, 1943 Some local residents were asking their neighbors about the earth tremor which they felt last Thursday evening about 7 o’clock, but the responses indicated that the quake was not noticed by many in the vicinity. Those whose homes were so located as to feel the shock reported that it was quite strong and in some cases (caused) dishes to rattle.
July 19, 1945 A tremor of brief duration at about 6:45 Sunday morning shook the startled citizens of this community from their slumber. The quake – if that’s what it was – was preceded by a low sustained rumble like thunder.
January 13, 1982 Charlotte and Washington county residents reacted with fear, surprise and even a little mirth to the series of three earthquakes which shook the region over a three-day period this week. The quakes, which made houses, shake and dishes rattle but caused no serious damage, sent many local residents to see if their furnaces had exploded . . . All three earthquakes were centered in the Trouser Lake area east of Plaster Rock, N.B. and their tremors were felt as far away as Newfoundland and Connecticut.
December 14 1983 No damage was reported in Upper Mills, epi-center of the areas latest earthquake reported on Thursday, but people in the area did react to the early morning noise.
