| In July of 2002 the
McGibbon family of Moores Mills held a family reunion at
which time they dedicated a plaque in honor of the
original founders, Agnes and William McGibbon, who came
to the area in 1846, from County Antrim, Northern
Ireland. Mr. Ed McGibbon now lives at the original homestead which is named Maplecroft and the plaque is beside the driveway near the road. (See picture courtesy of St.Croix Courier) The following information was given in a handout to the attendees at the reunion. In May 1846, William and Agnes McGibbon left Belfast, Ireland to sail to America. The eldest son, James and eldest daughter Mary Henrietta and her husband Ireland King had already arrived in America. James was a merchant in St.Stephen. There are no descendents of these two children here today. Another son of William and Agnes, Joseph, had emigrated to St.Stephen around 1840. He was a lumberman. Joseph later worked his way back to Ireland and brought his father and mother, William and Agnes, and their son William Jr. and their daughters Margaret and Susan and husband to America. They settled in Moores Mills on the land now called Maplecroft which is occupied by Edgar McGibbon at the present time - a great, great grandson of William and Agnes. Joseph settled on the land next door which is now occupied by Craig McGibbon, another great, great grandson of William and Agnes. |

Joseph married Margaret Parks and had 12 children, most of whom moved to Maine. We have some of these descendents with us today - namely Richard McGibbon and his sons Rick and Thomas.
One of Joseph's sons, Hugh Edgar remained on the home place and his sons James and Willard are represented here today by their children Donna, Barbara, Mary Lou, Craig, Edgar and their families.
Joseph's daughter Blanche married Filmore Christie of Basswood Ridge and Olive who is here today is her granddaughter.
William Jr. inherited Maplecroft from his parents. He had 3 sons and 1 daughter. His youngest son, William Frederick eventually took over Maplecroft and operated a poultry farm. William Frederick is represented here today by Isabel and Charles and their families as well as the children of their two deceased siblings Henry and Jessie Carolyn. William Jr's daughter Susan married Arthur White and their descendents Ruth Speedy, Dot Hanson, and Ruth Johnson are here today.
William and Agnes' daughter Susan and husband John Dick also settled in Moores Mills. Their family is represented here today by Clarke, Eileen and families. Their daughter Margaret married Matthew Parks of St.Stephen. They are represented by Joan Parks.
The first McGibbon Reunion was held in August 1997 and it was decided to erect a memorial to William and Agnes. Everyone is pleased that this has been accomplished and is being dedicated here today in their memory.
