April 14, 1910 from St.Croix Courier - On Wednesday afternoon, March 30th, three children of George McGlinchey, a boy of nine and two younger sisters, without their mothers consent, went into the nearby woods to search for gum. Later the boy and oldest girl returned home, and reported that they had lost Janie, the four year old sister, in the woods.
The father and all the men of the near neighborhood were away from home and the distracted mother searched in vain for the little one until the shades of night drove her from the woods.
Mr. Christie, a near neighbor, came home about dark, and being notified of what had happened, took a lantern and searched the woods until morning, but his labour of love was unrewarded.
Others joined in the search in the morning, and near noon, the body of the little girl was found about a mile from her home.
It would be hard for any pen to tell of the hardships and agony suffered by this little babe as she wandeed alone, with sobs and tears, in the forest, through snow and water, till she lay down on an icy bed to take her last sleep on earth. When found, it was all too evident that the spirited had entered that Heaven where the welcome was Suffer the little children to come unto me.
The sympathy of the community was manifested in the very large funeral precession that followed the little casket to the cemetery at Oak Hill.
