MOORES MILLS HISTORY

By Tom Moffatt

Moores Mills is a community that has "shifted" during time.

The main interest initially was the stream of course. At first there was just a set of mills belonging to the Moores (lumber and grain). But then by circa 1870 there were a number of mills (how many, I do not know), and quite a number of secondary businesses, or both sides of the stream and upstream - eg. several funiture makers (different niche markets).

Agriculturally, the lands on the St.David side near the stream deteriorated after about 1880 as folks went west. At one time it was mostly fields up the road from Moores Mills towards Honeydale, but not now.

Then especially from 1840 onwards, and especially after 1850, the lands along what is now the main highway north of Moores Mills became more important, and to a degee have stayed that way.

In addition, the Valley Road along the St.James side of Moores Mills Lake did not exist as more than a marshy walking trail until the early 20th century, and its development impacted Moores Mills development.

So what you see now is not what you saw 100 or 150 years go. Now the higher proportion of development is cetainly on the St.James side of the stream - and there is a tendancy to put the 'dot' on the map even up at the highway # 3 - even though that does not reflect genealogical reality or interest.

The point is that if someone heard their "folks" were from Moores Mills, they need to know that the records could be in either Parish.
