Oct 14 1869 Scotch Ridge – Saxby Gale

The building for a School House and Temperance Hall, now in the course of erection was completely demolished.  The Tea meeting advertised for this week was to raise money to finish it.  The Tea Meeting still goes on, and we are glad to hear that our friends at Scotch Ridge, nothing daunted by this unexpected loss, will still erect their School House and Hall. Success to them, for their perseverance merits it.  Among those who have suffered in Scotch Ridge, we learn the names of Messrs. William McKenzie, Robt. Matheson, Wm. McLeod, Angus McKenzie, and John McMann.

There is an old gentleman living on Scotch Ridge, 90 years of age, who has never yet seen a Railroad!  The same person in old times has carried a bag of wheat to St.Andrews to get it ground and carried the flour back on his shoulder – a distance of 25 miles each way.  That was the time when people used to go from the same vicinity to the nearest Post Office, which was at St.Andrews, once a year.

The Bean Bake at Scotch Ridge yesterday was a great success, the numbers in attendance being four or five hundred.  Our reporter counted as many as 140 horses and carriages, which had brought parties from the whole country side. The provisions, including the beans, were of the best, in abundance, and were served in the best style.  There were dancing and games, and excellent music was discoursed by the L.O.L. Band, No. 61

John Matheson’s barn at Scotch Ridge was burned to the ground at one o’clock on Wednesday morning.  The fire caught in the back of the barn and is supposed to be of an incendiary origin.  A mowing machine, horse rake, sled, harnesses and other contents were destroyed.  Only vigorous efforts saved the house. Mr. Matheson’s loss is a heavy one, as he had no insurance.  This is the fourth fire on Scotch Ridge within the last six months.

A grand work has been done on the road leading from here to St.Stephen, making it a most enjoyable drive for persons who take pleasure in that pastime.

Polleys Brothers have been busy during the past week cutting and packing ice.  They have already something like ten tons packed which is perfect, as clear as glass and without a flaw.

Oct 8, 1914

The people of Pomeroy Ridge, Scotch Ridge, Basswood Ridge and Gleason Road held a supper in Scotch Ridge hall on Thursday last.  A large number attended - quite a number from St.Stephen.  The sum of $77.25 was realized and given to the patriotic fund.

Scotch Ridge:  The house and barn of John Hamilton at Scotch Ridge with practically all their contents were destroyed by fire Tuesday night.  Hugh Matheson and wife had just moved in with Mr. Hamilton and lost all their property.
