Pomeroy Ridge Cemetery Stones

History of the cemetery as written in the book "HOME Pomeroy Ridge" - parts of it written, edited and published by Charles Smith, great great grandson of Daniel Smith who is buried there.

"Andrew McAdam received two grants of land for one hundred and eighty acres each, and for some reason, what was known as the upper grant, reverted back to the Crown and became known as "Common Land"; it was later sold to the Eastern Pulpwood Company. The upper and older half of the cemetery is part of that Common Land" land. The lower-half of the cemetery is from Andrew McAdam's second or lower land grant, which was later owned by Mr. King, who sold it to Daniel Smith in 1837. In 1963, Daniel Smith's great grandson, George Smith, gave more land so that the cemetery might be extended further."

The oldest marked grave is that of Robert Spence, 1771- 1828. It is not known if the year he died was the actual year the land was first used as a cemetery - there is a good possibility there may be some unmarked graves. The question is sometimes asked, why are some of the earlier settlers of Pomeroy Ridge, buried at Scotch Ridge? The most logical answer would be that they were Presbyterians and the cemetery at Scotch Ridge was Presbyterian Church property, up until 1925, at which time it became the United Church of Canada. The cemetery at Pomeroy Ridge was in use some forty years before the Methodist Church was established in the community and there the cemetery was not church property, but as time went on, it was noted that the families associated with the Methodist church had their family plots in the cemetery.

In 1949 a group of younger couples formed a club for the purpose of creating more interest in community life. The club formed a new cemetery committee which has been active ever since. In 1980 the committee was reorganized with an executive being appointed plus work committees. Work is done on a voluntary basis with cash donations going for mowers and other out of pocket costs".

The oldest marked grave is that of Robert Spence 1771 - 1828. The first settler to Pomeroy Ridge was Benjamin Pomeroy. His stone is also located here.
