The tables on the attached pages are transcriptions from the 1901 census of Saint Patrick Parish in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada. It was enumerated from April 1 to 20, 1901. The transcription was made from National Archives of Canada microfilm reel T-6440.

Transcription Information

The spelling, capitalization, ditto marks, dashes and abbreviations were in the original. Punctuation has been eliminated. The original had line numbers from 1 to 50 but these have been modified by prefixing the page number. Certain columns have been omitted or have had their headings abbreviated as described more fully in the  Page and Column Headings section. A special column of community codes C, S, E, D, and B has been added as described in the the Communities section.

Overall, the original document was of poor quality; the handwriting was sloppy and the spelling was appalling, even by the standards of old documents. Usually, the standard "sic" has been added, but certain misspellings such as "Margret", "Babtist" (!),  "Episicopal" and "Neice" were so common that I haven't bothered in those cases. It was also difficult to distinguish capital I's from J's and many of the numerals were confusing. In general, the dates should be treated with some caution even if a question mark hasn't been added. This is especially true for page 6, which was badly microfilmed.

Sometimes the place of birth was clearly written as "N. R." This must mean New Brunswick.

The following markers have been added by the transcriber:

Note that in the process of converting from the original spreadsheet transcription to a text file to HTML, some (but not all) spaces mysteriously disappeared, so if you see words strung together, that's what happened. I have tried to correct these errors but some may have slipped through.

Communities

One nice feature of the 1901 census was that the specific community of each household was listed in Schedule 2 - Buildings and Land, Churches and Schools.  The communities were:

Clarence Ridge (page 1)
St. Patrick (Settlement) (pages 2 - 5)
Elmsville (pages 4 - 5, 9 - 10, 16)
Digdeguash (pages 8 - 9)
Bocabec (pages 10 - 16)
Schedule 2 has not been transcribed in full, but the appropriate place names have been added to the top of each page in the Schedule 1 transcription. The letters C, S, E, D, and B have also been placed in the second column of the Schedule 1 transcription before each family number to indicate the communities. A few families were not listed in Schedule 2 so they do not have community codes.

Page and Column Headings

The page headings are nearly exact, except that the French text (yes, the forms were bilingual in 1901) and a bit of the English text have been omitted to save space. Underlining indicates hand-written text. Column headings with asterisks have been abbreviated; otherwise they are identical to the original headings which were:

1: Dwelling House.
2: Family or Household.
3: Name of each person in family or household on 31st March, 1901.
4: Sex.
5: Colour.
6: Relationship to head of family or household.
7: Single, married, widowed or divorced.
8: Month and date of birth.
9: Year of birth.
10: Age at last birthday.
11: Country or place of birth. (If in Canada specify Province or Territory, and add "r" or "u" for rural or urban, as the case may be.)
12: Year of immigration to Canada.
13: Year of naturalization.
14: Racial or Tribal origin.
15: Nationality.
16: Religion.
17: Profession, occupation, trade or mean of living of each person. (If person has retired from profession or trade, add "r" for retired.)

Columns 2, 4, 5, and 15 have been omitted to save space. Column 2 was always the same as column 1. Column 4 was usually obvious from the name. Column 5 was always white ("W") and column 15 was always "Canadian". The "r" and "u" marks in column 11 have been omitted. There were also seventeen columns (18 to 34) dealing with employment, education, language and health. They have been omitted from this online transcription.
